  2. E-services • E-service refer to the online provision and use of public services and the electronic dissemination of information. Some online services require user authentication which usually involves a certification card or online banking codes

  3. The Role of The National Archives Service as a service producer • The National Archives and seven provincial archives • Ensures the availability of records to our customers, over 170 hkm shelving • Records used in our reading rooms • To an incresing extent also online • The enquiry service provides certificates and reports as well as officially certified copies and copies for which no certification is required

  4. The Situation Today • Reference databases: VAKKA, AARRE, Databases produced by several projects • Digital Archives; an increasing amount of material in digitised form • E-mail; it is possible for our customers to start an inquiry process by e-mail • We’ve lacked the whole picture analysis or strategy of our online services

  5. Strategicaly important • The new strategy of the National Archives Service 2010-2015 emphasizes the importance of the online e-services to our customers • We have to carefully implement the strategy to our daily work; it is always the question of the resources

ASTIA-project • A close co-operation with the KDK (NDL) • ASTIA is the online system for client services and document ordering system • The functions of ASTIA is based on main processes of our information services • A common interface for our reference databases in order to begin an e-service process; • Our customers do not have to know about the provenance of the archives • You can order archival materials to the reading room or you can start an enquiry process over the web • It must be easy to use • Interactive, social media experiences • We shall build it in modules. Some parts should be ready by the end of this year.; • A close co-operation with the KDK (NDL). ASTIA is a back system for the Public Interfase system of KDK (NDL)

  7. Portti (Gate) • How to improve the accessibility of our digital collections • Collection of understandable knowledge environments for unexperienced users • To build up thematic wholenesses (for instance genealogy) • Interactive purposes; in the future offer our customers a possibility to add information to our collections
