What Does This Mean? • Developmentally responsive middle schools provide support through personnel and programs • More than just a guidance counselor • Adult advocate for each student • Examples: • Counselors, school psychologists, social workers, teachers • DARE, Teen Institute, Peer Tutoring

Research • More research is needed • Points to positive results • Connors(1986): Advisory programs helped students “grow emotionally & socially, contributed to a positive school climate, helped students learn about school & getting along with their classmates, & enhanced teacher-student relationships” • Lapan, Gysbers, & Petroski (2001): Comprehensive school counseling programs are related to indicators of student safety & success • Akos & Kingsley (2008): Recent research looks at the evolving role of the middle school counselor; “fully comprehensive and developmental guidance programs can lead to positive student outcomes”; article found on NMSA’s site

How Do Schools Implement Guidance Services? • Form a guidance task force • 5 Guiding Questions: • Who are our students & what do they need? • How are guidance & support services currently handled in our school? Who does what, when, and for whom? • What are the basic components we must have in our school to meet the multifaceted needs of our students? • What services should be provided for students who are at risk & have serious social & emotional problems? • How can we implement proactive guidance in our schools & offer essential guidance-related skills to 100% of our students?

  5. How Do Schools Implement Guidance Services? (cont.) • Form student advocacy groups • Give teachers & counselors the opportunity to work with a small group of students • Counselors & guidance personnel support and work with teachers • Training, class activities • Keep parents informed

  6. Difficulties with Implementation • Guidance & advisory programs remain a difficult concept to implement • Advisory programs may no longer do what they were intended to • Issue of having enough staff for an adult advocate for every student • Training of staff
