This program will provide you with important information of a variety of topics relating to your high school years. It will also tell you exactly what you need to do to get the most out of these years. If you use this information, you are sure to have a great high school experience. It is our hope that one day you will receive your high school diploma and continue your educational and vocational careers.
UNDERSTAND YOUR ACADEMIC RECORD • ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THEIR SCHOOL’S ACADEMIC POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALSO NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE TERMS GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA), CLASS RANK AND TRANSCRIPT • IN ORDER TO GRADUATE , YOU MUST FULFILL YOUR HIGH SCHOOL’S ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS. THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE ESTABLISHED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. • THE BESE BOARD (THE BOARD OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION) ESTABLISHES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION.
CAN YOU ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS? How many credits is a one year academic course like English I worth?_________ How many credits do you need in order to advance to the 10th grade?___ 11th grade?___ 12th grade?___ to graduate?___ What happens if you don’t have the credits you need to advance to the next grade? ____ Of the courses you are currently taking, which ones are required for graduation?________________ Is there a state required test that you must pass in order to graduate?___ If yes, when do you take it?_______
WHAT IS GPA? • Grade point average, or GPA, is simply the average of a student’s semester (or end of term) grades, starting with the freshman year. GPA in Jefferson Parish uses a 4.0 scale in which an A=4, B=3,C=2, D=1. If a student has all A’s, he/she has a 4.0 grade point average. Students who have B’s in half their courses and C’s in the other half have a 2.5 GPA. • While a variety of methods are used to determine GPA, the higher your grades, the higher your GPA .
WHAT IS CLASS RANK? • Many high schools use class rank to show where a student stands in relation to the other members of the graduating class. The student with the highest GPA is number one, the student with the second highest GPA is number two, etc. Class rank is generally written as two numbers. The first number represents the student’s place in the class; the second number represents the total number of students in the class (e.g., 35/389). Because GPAs are used to determine class rank, you must have a high GPA in order to have an impressive class rank.
What is a High School Transcript? • A high school transcript is a document that details a student’s academic achievement in high school. Your transcript is, quite simply, a copy of your high school record. All high school transcripts generally contain the following information: • Grades and credits for each course completed, beginning with ninth grade. • Attendance records. • Current cumulative GPA and class rank • Anticipated graduation date • Test scores (e.g. LEAP, GEE, SAT, ACT)
CALENDAR • Your high school most likely puts out a calendar that shows when school starts and ends, when it will be closed for holidays and vacations, when report cards and midterm/interim reports come out, etc. At the beginning of each year write all of these dates on your calendar at home.
ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY • Understand that you are expected to be in school every day unless you are ill. If you have a chronic or extended illness, have a parent call the attendance office and/or counselor and explain what’s going on. If you are absent for more than a couple of days, try to get work to do at home so that you don’t get too far behind. • When you have a job, you are expected to be there every day. You are expected to be on time, to dress appropriately, and to be courteous to the people around you. You are also expected to give your best effort each day.
SCHOOL RULES • In order to provide students with a safe environment that encourages learning, schools need to have rules. Most students understand that rules are necessary and they follow them. Consequences can range anywhere from detention to expulsion. While rules vary from school to school, no high school will allow weapons, drugs, violence, smoking, alcohol, intimidation or harassment. • Students need to take an active role in making their school a safe, inviting place to learn. If you feel threatened, or if you become aware of a situation that may jeopardize your safety, or the safety of another, please see your principal, dean of students or counselor immediately. • If you ever have a question, concern or complaint about a rule or policy, see your counselor or talk to your principal.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ACTIVITIES • High schools have eligibility requirements for sports and other activities. Athletes may, for example, be required to maintain a minimum GPA in a certain number of classes. At many high schools, these same eligibility requirements also apply to students who participate in activities like band, Student Council, cheerleading, etc. Know your school’s eligibility requirements. If you have a question or concern about eligibility, see your counselor, coach, or club or activity sponsor. Get involved in your school, join a club, sport or school group to make your school years better and a time to remember.
Be in School Every Day The importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized. When you miss school, you miss lectures, notes, class discussions, homework explanations, assignments, quizzes, and tests. It doesn’t matter how conscientious you are about making up your work, you can never make up everything you miss, even when you’re out for only one school day. IN ORDER TO GET GOOD GRADES, YOU NEED TO BE IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY. Students must be present a minimum of 160 days for a full year course to be eligible to receive credit for courses taken. Exceptions can be made only in the event of extended illness as verified by a physician and/or other extenuating circumstances as approved by the school system.
Good attendance will not guarantee you good grades.You are, however, pretty much guaranteed bad grades if you have poor attendance.
