2. BATA SHOES Bata Shoe Company (in Czech: Bata or Batovy závody) is a large family shoe company.
It is currently headquartered in Toronto, Canada, and operates 4 business units worldwide – Bata Europe, Bata Asia Pacific-Africa, Bata Latin America and Bata North America.
It has retail presence in over 50 countries and production facilities in 26 countries.
In its history the company has sold 14 billion pairs of shoes.

5. ESTABLISHING A BUSINESS In 1894 Tomas, his brother Antonin and his sister Anna inherited 800 gold florins from their mother and they invested this in an enterprise. Tomas was under age, so the Bata Shoe Company was registered on the name of his brother Antonin. They employed about 10 workers, who had to work fixed working hours and they had a regular weekly remuneration. This way of leading the company was very unusual.
In 1895 Antonin left the company to join the army, his sister Anna got married and Tomas Bata took over the company leadership alone.
In 1897 Tomas introduced the „Batovka“ - the first fabric shoe and with it, production mechanization. So called „Batovky“ became very popular. The production extended and Bata bought the first hand-powered sewing machines.

7. DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPANY In 1908 Antonin died and Anna got married.
In 1910 there were about 350 workers in the company and they made more than 3,000 pairs of shoes.
Bata Shoe Group employed more and more workers so Tomas decided to build so-called „Bata´s houses“, which were build in the city of ZLIN (City of Bata)
Since 1912 the company started to enter into employment contracts with workers and workers were punished for bad quality goods. In this year Tomas married Maria Mencikova. Two years later their son named Tomas was born.
8. WAR AND BATA SHOE GROUP The company was famous and that is why Bata got an order for 50,000 pairs of shoes during the First World War.
From 1914 to 1918 the number of workers increased about 10 times. At the end of the war the daily production was nearly 6,000 pairs of shoes and Bata opened shops in Prague, Liberec, Viena, Pilsen and some other cities.
10. POSTWAR SITUATION At the end of 1918 Bata had many problems and the company didn't have money so Bata founded private accounts for his employees. This accounts were remunerated at 10% interest and this money was used for the investment in working capital. Each member of the company was an entrepreneur.
After the war currencies were devalued and consumer purchasing power was low, so Bata cut shoe prices by 50% and shops were flooded by customers again.
In 1923 Bata had 112 affiliates and Tomas became the Mayor of Zlin. His slogan was: „I want to work for everyone. Fight against misery!“
In 1925 The Bata School of Work was founded. It provided education and practical training to future Bata managers.
11. FOREIGN TRADE Since 1924 Bata wanted to establish a business branch abroad. One year later Bata had 5,200 workers and they produced about 200,000 pairs of shoes per year.
From 1926 to 1928 the export of shoes increased and the factory started to produce branded products. Net sales of Bata were 1.9 mld. Czech Crowns.
12. TOMAS BATA JR In 1932 Tomas Bata died in a plane crash.
Later still a young man Thomas Bata Jr took over the company leadership.
In 1939 Bata operated 63 companies in various industries but footwear remained the core business with 60 million pairs sold per year in more than 30 countries.
In 1945 All Bata companies in Eastern European countries were nationalized by communist governments.
In 1960s The Company's headquarters were officially relocated to Toronto under the leadership of Thomas J Bata.
In 1989 after the political changes the Bata Company was invited to return to the Czech Republic where the company remains a symbol of national pride and achievement.

1 September 2008, at the age of 93.
