Shoguns rule Japan • Strong nobles wanted a new government. So they fought the emperor. • Two powerful clans went to war in 1150. • The Minamoto clan won in the end.
The Emperor and Shogun • When the Minamoto clan won they didn’t get rid of the emperor, but was used as a figurehead, a person who appears in power but is not, for safety reasons. • One shogun at any given time ruled Japan for the next 700 years.
