Walt Whitman was born May 31, 1819. In his younger days, he was a journalist, volunteer nurse, and a practicing lawyer. As a poet, he was considered one of the most influential and was often called the “father of free verse”. His sexuality was questioned and he was highly political. He died at the age of 72 on March 26, 1892; his funeral was open to the public. Walt Whitman in Washington D.C between 1865 - 1867.
