2011 • Two modules • Training materials for CHWs • Consistent with IMCI but appropriate for CHWs • Regular visits to homes ofpregnant women and for 2 weeks after delivery • Counselling cards used to guide discussions at home • If CHW identifies sick child then guides what to do, and when to refer (sometimes referred to as 'iCCM') • No reference to HIV or TB
Nompilo study • The effectiveness of an HIV-adapted Integrated Management of Childhood Illness training and supervision programme of community health workers to support interventions that will reduce Mother-to-Child HIV transmission and improve Delivery of Other Essential Newborn and Child • HIV-adapted WHO materials • Quality improvement supervision of CHWs
November 2012 WHO and UNICEF consultation to review CHW modules • Considered the education level and competencies of CHWs • Considered the range of routine tasks that CHWs deliver and the limits of what else they might be able to do • Listed potential HIV and TB-related interventions • Thought through the minimum set of HIV and TB-related activities and interventions that could be delivered by CHWs • Thought about the practical implications for CHWs, as members of the community, to know communicate specific messages and deliver these interventions • WHO-UNICEF materials adaptations
