Aspects of Health and Children in Nature I. An Introduction to Healthy Development, Inc. II. Barriers to children in nature – fear/risk III. HIA and Quantitative Forecasting to inform policy makers IV. HIA for Children in Nature V. Furthering the movement
I. Healthy Development, Inc. • A Florida-based National Consultancy • Forecast Impacts of Development • Public Health, community development, environmental background • Work with community developers • Our place on the U.S. landscape:

III. Health Impact Assessment • Uses a variety of methods to forecast health, social and economic impacts • Engages the community • Employs qualitative and quantitative data • Is non-regulatory in the U.S.
The Ultimate Goal of HIA • Informing (re)development decisions • Improving communities • Planning for sustainable and healthy neighborhoods • Increasing happiness
Forecasting using research and population statistics • Using the Pope/JAMA relative risk (RR) formula, a 0.0672 increase in PM2.5 would • result in a relative risk of 1.00039 • The formula for this is: • RR = 1.06(0.0672/10) = 1.00039 • Components of the equation: • RR=1.06 • PM2.5 increase=0.0672 • /10=increase per 10 ug/m3 of PM2.5
