Preface • Methylhexanamine or DMAA is a stimulant that causes vasoconstriction while promoting fat metabolism. • It was originally created by Eli Lilly as a prescription nasal decongestant. • After the ban of ephedrine (a stimulant related to methamphetamine) for non-medical use, DMAA was introduced as the replacement. • Most DMAA supplements are combined with caffeine. • Most notorious DMAA product: Jack3d by USPlabs.
The Story • June 2011, Michael L. Sparling dies from cardiac arrest after a combat training run. • Fall 2011, a 32-year-old soldier is hospitalized after collapsing during a fitness test; dies a month later. • December 2011, the DoD bans all products containing DMAA; launches investigation.
The Story • April 2012, FDA sends out warning letter demanding evidence that DMAA is safe; makers say they already have provided evidence. • Same month, 30-year-old Claire Squires dies during last mile of London Marathon; DMAA was ruled as the trigger. • December 2012, DoD concludes DMAA is dangerous. • February 2013, given the mounting evidence against DMAA, the parents of Mr. Sparling file a lawsuit claiming DMAA’s misrepresentation led to their son’s death.
