History and political system • The islands were originally uninhabited but later Maldivian and Arab marines and traders as well as pirates landed on the amazing shoreline. • During the Napoleonic wars, France ruled the archipelago but in 1812 the islands became a colony of the Kingdom of England. In the process of decolonization the Seychelles gained their independence from Great Britain in 1976 and became a free member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The symbolic Head of the Commonwealth is Elisabeth II but thereal state representative is the President.
