  1. SUBCULTURES 1

  2. Culture is a group of peoples attitudes, beliefs and social practises. It provides people with familiar traditions and customs- the way they dress, food they eat, spending leisure. All people participate in their surrounding culture.

  3. The culture that the majority of a society follows is mainstream culture. MAINSTREAM CULTURE

  4. Subcultures are groups with a distinct set of beliefs that exists within a dominant culture. MAINSTREAM CULTURE

  5. A subculture has a unique set of characteristics that it’s members follow. They can be based on cultural background, experiences, interests and occupations. This may be a specific activity, a music style, or a way of dressing.

  6. Some subcultures may express their alternative opinions about particular issues. Their alternative points of view can lead to debate and ultimately pave the way for change.

  7. Example: 1960’s US hippy culture protested America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, and drove the peace movement.

  8. A subculture that is in opposition to it’s surrounding culture is called a counter-culture.

  9. Some subcultures may quickly or slowly become popular enough to become a part of mainstream culture.

  10. Subcultures and the Media The media is usually concerned with large audiences. A subculture with a small number, or who is not very visible or vocal, is generally ignored by the media.

  11. As a subculture grows in numbers, savvy media producers may try to connect with this possible audience, and create products or outlets that may appeal to this subculture.

  15. Targeting subcultures in Australia: Magazines: The way magazines are produced enable them to target specific sub-cultures, and even contribute to the culture.

  16. Targeting subcultures in Australia: Web: The Internet is highly equipped to target very specific sub-cultures. It is broadly accessible, allows for interaction and involvement. Most of all, it is cheap to produce, allowing for niche audiences to be catered for. The web’s global nature means that culture is not restricted to location.

  17. Representation of a sub-culture in the media: Sometimes the only things we know about a group of people is what we have seen on the news or on a TV show. The media can make decisions about how a subculture is represented.

  18. Subcultures rarely get the chance to represent themselves in mass media, and the media generally has only a surface understanding of the people.

  19. Sometimes, the media represents the subculture as weird or even dangerous. Sometimes, the media represents a subculture as desirable, and will try to associate their products with this subcultural style.

  20. Subcultures are a group of people that are different from mainstream culture. Subcultures can change a culture and become a dominant force. Media producers can target subcultures as potential audiences. The media can select how it represents subcultures.

  21. Choose one of the subcultural image from a media product, and analyse the way it has been constructed. Identify the codes that have been used to establish this person as a member of a particular subculture: - symbolic, written, technical (audio not applicable) Positive or negative values?
