Treaty of Versailles • Terms of the Treaty: • Forced Germany to take full blame for war • Germany must pay reparations • cover cost of war’s destruction and pension money for wounded Allied soldiers • Total= $30 billion ($2.7 trillion today) • Weakened Germany by limiting the size of its armed forces • The Germans were forced to sign the treaty, but this caused resentment and bad feelings for years to come…
Psychological impact • “Never such innocence again” • First large scale war that involved countries all over the world • Soldiers experienced the horrors of a new type of warfare, were never the same
Social Impact • Men lost limbs and were mutilated • Birthrate fell tremendously • Invalids unable to work • Ethnic hostility • Influenza epidemic • 20 million people died
