Overview June 12th to July 20th, 2009 Responses: 352 Completion Rate: 68.8% Purpose: to gather input from the whole community of Burnaby, on residents' thoughts, attitudes and experiences with Burnaby's increasingly diverse population as well as opinions about supporting newcomers in our community. • Perceptions of multiculturalism and its impacts on their family and community; • Involvement in the development of a welcoming and inclusive community; • Views on service, resource and program gaps; and • Requirements for information and how they would like to obtain information. Multiculturalism and cultural diversity is recognized and supported by the community 98% indicated that they saw Burnaby as a Culturally Diverse or Multicultural community Only six respondents (2.1%) indicated that they did not The Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table
Multiculturalism and cultural diversity is recognized and supported by the community The majority (60%) of respondents stated that cultural diversity or multiculturalism has had a positive impact on themselves and their families. 70% of respondents indicated that cultural diversity or multiculturalism has had a favourable impact on Burnaby and less than 6% reported a negative impact. Burnaby is a welcoming and inclusive community – but it’s still difficult to belong 72% of respondents stated that special efforts should be made to welcome and include new immigrants. Only 10% indicated that special efforts should not be made. The Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table

Further work is required to make Burnaby truly a Welcoming and Inclusive Community “While the majority of survey participants indicated that they did already take some role in welcoming and including new immigrants into the community, many indicated that there is more work to be done.” The Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table
