  2. CBA • CBA=Classroom Based Assessment • Junior Topic= US Foreign Policy • How the United States government interacts with the world affects people across the globe. You will evaluate a specific U.S. foreign policy based on an analysis of its causes and effects.

  3. Your Task • State a position on the effectiveness of a specific U.S. foreign policy that outlines reasons in support of your position. • Provide reason(s) for your position that include: • An analysis of why the policy was implemented for national and/or international interests from two or more of the following social science perspectives: • geographic • cultural • political • economic • sociological • psychological • An analysis of the effects of the policy including a discussion of: • How the policy affected stakeholders in the United States. • How the policy imposed costs OR provided benefits for other nations. • Make explicit references within the paper or presentation to three or more credible sources that provide relevant information AND cite sources within the paper, presentation, or bibliography.

  4. Foreign Policy Defined • F.P.—How a nation faces/acts in world • Goal—To ensure nation’s survival/security • Security—Involves more than the Physical • A Fascist Germany would’ve created less open US society. • Primary Factors— • Geography • History/Experiences • Values/Beliefs

  6. Foreign Policy Options When charged with protecting America’s security should you? • Negotiate (Diplomacy) • Assimilate (Appeasement) • Flee (Isolation) • Fight (War)

Definitions • Geographic: The study of the Earth's surface, the connections between places, and the relationships between people and their environment (the land) • Cultural: denoting or deriving from or distinctive of the ways of living built up by a group of people; influenced by ethnic and cultural ties • Political: politics - the activities and affairs involved in managing a state or a government • Economic: of or relating to an economy, the system of production and management of material wealth

Definitions • Sociological: The study of society, human social interaction, and the rules and processes that bind and separate people not only as individuals, but as members of associations, groups, and institutions • Psychological: psychological - Relating to the mind and the processes of the mind.   10. 11th grade CBA – Steps • Choose a Foreign Policy created/carried out during the Cold War. (we are all going to focus on the Cold War time period) • For example: Vietnamization • State whether or not it was an effective US Foreign Policy • Provide reasons for your position that include • include an analysis of why the policy was implemented using 2 social sciences perspectives • Include an analysis of the effects of the policy • How it affected stakeholders (define these) in the US • How the policy imposed costs OR benefits for other nations • Your paper must include at least 3 primary sources that are cited in your papers • It is important to bring your research to class on June 4th

Process • On Thursday May 31st you will have one class period to gather all of the evidence you will use to write your actual essay. • This includes material you can quote from to support your argument (primary and secondary material) • On Monday June 4th you will have one class period to write the CBA.

Literary Analysis • You have all chosen a book to read for Book Chats. • This is now your final chance to write a proficient level 5 literary analysis. • You will choose the topic you will write on. You can write on anything you would like as long as it is analyzing the text you are reading. The topic must be approved by Ms. Horner before you start writing. • Dates: • Topic due to turnitin.com Wednesday June 6th • Paper due to turnitin.com Friday June 15th
