Just When You Thought You've Heard It All • In the May 31, 2003, edition of the Concord (NH) Monitor, Richard N. Ostling reports on a new book released by Pilgrim Press, the publishing arm of the Cleveland_based United Church of Christ. • The book is written by Theodore W. Jennings, Jr., a minister of the United Methodist Church, and the head of "gay and lesbian studies" at the Chicago Theological Seminary (a UCC school). • The name of the book? The Man Jesus Loved: Homoerotic Narratives -- From The New Testament. • The author's contention within this book is "that Jesus not only approved same sex relationships but was involved in one himself."
The Episcopal Church of New Hampshire ordained an openly "gay" [homosexual] man to be "bishop coadjutor." • Note These Facts About This Man: • The new "bishop," V. Gene Robinson, was once married, but left his wife of 10 years for a man. • When asked about his previous marriage [to a woman], Robinson said that he "answered God's call to acknowledge myself as a gay man.” • My wife and I, in order to KEEP our wedding vow to 'honor [each other] in the Name of God,' made the decision to let each other go. • We returned to church, where our marriage had begun, and in the context of the eucharist, released each other from our wedding vows, asked each other's forgiveness, cried a lot, pledged ourselves to the joint raising of our children, and shared the Body and Blood of Christ." • Robinson went on to say doing that was "the biggest risk of my life," but it "won the hearts of my daughters, whom I feared losing,” • Later, the love of a wonderful partner, with whom I've made a home for the past 13 years."

The Blasphemy Of Jesus By The Mr. Jennings And The Homosexual Community • The contention that Jesus "not only approved same sex relationships but was involved in one himself" goes far beyond the absurd and clearly into outright blasphemy. • Jesus was a man who lived without sin (2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet. 2:22; 1 John 3:5), but to claim He was involved in a homosexual relationship is to make the claim that Jesus sinned! • As one who lived under the Old Law, Jesus was constrained to keep it perfectly to be without sin, and yet that Law stated, • "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." (Lev. 20:13) • If Jesus participated in such behavior, will Mr. Jennings admit, then, that Jesus died on the cross because He sinned? • Will Mr. Jennings say that the Son of God sinned and, therefore, died because of His own sins, and not for ours?
Further …. • His basis for this contention that Jesus was 'actively gay'? Are Based On Two passages (John 13:23_25; 21:20)! • Somehow, he gets out of these passages that Jesus and the unnamed disciple were carrying on a homosexual [sinful] relationship. • Let's read them: • John 13:23_25 — "Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, ‘Lord, who is it?’“ • John 21:20 — "Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"
DID YOU GET IT!!! • Did you find a homosexual relationship in there anywhere? • Well, Mr. Jennings did! • Richard Ostler writes, "As Jennings imagines it, this disciple was 'lying in (on) Jesus's lap — that is, snuggled up to Jesus.' • Jesus 'loved' all his colleagues, but Jennings thinks this one friendship was 'expressed by physical and personal intimacy — what we might today suppose to be a homoerotic or a 'gay' relationship.' • “Most likely it was 'sexual in character,' he says, though the Bible doesn't describe the 'specific practices' the pair used to 'celebrate' physical intimacy." • If such words do not utterly repulse you, I honestly don't know what would.
HEED THE WARNINGS OF SCRIPTURE! • “As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction” 1 Peter 3:16 • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.
DOES THE GREEK IMPLY SUCH BEHAVIOR? • Mr. Jennings apparently is no Greek scholar. • If he wanted to use the passages in the Gospel of John to identify a relationship that was [as he describes] a 'homoerotic relationship,' then surely the words used in Scripture would have revealed this, right? • But they do not! When John wrote that this disciple leaning on Jesus' bosom was the one "whom Jesus loved," the word he used [in both passages] was agapa,w (agapao), which means "to love (in a social or moral sense)." [Strong's] • It is also defined as "to have love for someone or something, based on sincere appreciation and high regard _ ‘to love, to regard with affection, loving concern, love.’" [Louw_Nida Lexicon] • This is not the word one would use if he meant to describe the sexual kind of love. • That word is e[roj (eros). Apparently, Mr. Jennings forgot to note that. Or maybe he ignored it, too.
OTHER OPEN HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE BIBLE??? • And if that wasn't enough, Richard Ostler points out that Jennings has found other 'homoerotic relationships' in the Bible that millions of people have missed for almost two millennia. • Ostler writes, "Jennings's related contention that Jesus approved same sex couples stems from the healing of the centurion's servant (Matthew 8:5-13). • Jennings contends that the servant was the centurion's 'boyfriend' and Jesus didn't denounce their relationship." • In Luke's account (7:1-10) we find the servant was "dear to him." (v. 2) • But, again, this is not the word that would in any way indicate a "homoerotic relationship." The word translated as "dear" simply means "pertaining to being of considerable value or worth." [Louw_Nida] • This servant was considered a valuable person to the centurion, and to say that he was anything more than that is a perversion of the text.
IT WILL GROW WORSE AND WORSE!!! • To further the shame of it all, religious organizations such as the United Church of Christ [not the "church of Christ" of the Bible], the Episcopal Church, and the United Methodist Church have all endorsed, in one way or another, the homosexual behavior of its members and — now — their leaders. • This is only one more step in the long path of digression and error that began many hundreds of years ago when men were not satisfied with the pure and undefiled word of God and started down the path to destruction. • It will only get worse as the years go by, and the teachings and practices within these human originated organizations will only become more ungodly and blasphemous, claiming to be of God even as they bring shame and reproach upon His holy name.
Mr. Jennings And Mr. Robinson Know The Error Of There Ways ! • Gene Robinson who was up for election in the Episcopalian church to be a bishop in New Hampshire as of June 7th, 2003 stated: • Robinson told CNN on Tuesday the 10th of June that this movement is no different than putting women into leadership roles. • He said there are verses in the Bible that speak against that as well. He then adds that the church is changing things. • He is basically arguing that they have broken God’s law on allowing women to serve (I Corinthians 11:1; 14:34-35, and I Timothy 2:11-12), therefore it is no harm to do it again.

THE SCRIPTURES TEACH… • There is but one law giver with the power to save and destroy (James 4:12). • The law of the Lord is the complete law of liberty (James 1:25). • God's law is not to have additions or subtractions to it: • Deuteronomy 4:2 • Deuteronomy 12:32 • Proverbs 30:5-6 • Galatians 1:6-12 • James 2:10 • Revelation 22:18-19
THE SCRIPTURES TEACH…God’s Law concerning homosexuality? • God has shown that man is for woman and woman is for man: • Genesis 2:19-24 • Matthew 19:3-5 • I Corinthians 7:2 • Man & man or woman & woman changes the order of all things God has provided concerning marriage (Ephesians 5:22-33). • God Created Adam and Eve NOT Adam and Steve.
THE SCRIPTURES TEACH…God’s Law concerning homosexuality? • God has clearly stated the sinfulness of homosexuality: • Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:16-19:27). • Abraham pleaded with God to save the city if 50 down to 10 righteous were found there. • Notice • Genesis 19:4-17 • II Peter 2:6 • Jude v. 7
THE SCRIPTURES TEACH…God’s Law concerning homosexuality? • Leviticus 18:22 • Leviticus 20:13 • CROSSDRESSING is even covered: • Deuteronomy 22:5 • Romans 1:26-27 • IT IS UN-NATURAL • IT IS SINFUL • IT IS AN ABOMINATION TO GOD
Can the civil government make a law on same sex marriages that would affect the church? • Christians are commanded to obey civil government, with one exception • Obey civil law…… (Romans 13:1-5 and I Peter 2:13-16). • Unless civil law conflicts with divine law (Acts 4:13-21; 5:26-29). • Christians must stand and preach against sin (of which homosexuality is) regardless of the law: • II Timothy 4:2 • Acts 20:26-27 • The church cannot change doctrine; the church must obey the doctrine of Christ • Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22-23; 5:23). • The church must follow the words of Christ (John 12:48).
In Conclusion …. • The time has come and still is when they will not endure sound doctrine (II Timothy 4:3-4). • The world’’s popular opinion does not change God’’s revealed truth (I Corinthians 3:18-19). • If we are followers of Christ we will be sure to stand on the unpopular side of this and other issues (Luke 6:26).

Cont. • The Homosexual Has The Right: • TO HEAR THE LAW OF CHRIST • TO OBEY FROM THE HEART THE LAW OF CHRIST • TO REPENT OF HIS WICKED WAYS • TO CONFESS THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST • AND TO BE BURIED IN THE WATERS OF BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF HIS SINS • AND TO WALK IN THE NEWNESS OF LIFE • BUT: • DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN IN HIS SINFUL LIFESTYLE: • 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
