Unit Map Set Up • Unit Name: Air • Unit Essential Question: Why is air pollution a problem? • LEQs- as we go • Vocab-as we go
Lesson Essential Question • What are the chemicals in air?
Air • Atmosphere- The blanket of gases that surrounds the earth • Zones or layers of atmosphere • Fill in organizer as we go
Layers of Atmosphere • Troposphere- region of the atmosphere where temperature falls as the distance from the surface increases • Temperature drops about 18.8*F per mile as you go up
Layers of Atmosphere • Stratosphere- above troposphere. As you go up, temperature increases because atmosphere gasses absorb UV light energy we perceive as heat • Planes fly here
Layers of Atmosphere • Mesosphere- meteors and rock fragments burn here • Thermosphere- layer with auroras, space shuttle orbits here • Exosphere- upper limit of our atmosphere
Atmosphere Packet • Read through the packet and complete the questions and activities • After that, create the layers of the atmosphere foldable.
Exit Question • What are the layers of the atmosphere?
Warm-up • List and explain the layers of the atmosphere.
Lesson Essential Question • What are the gasses in our atmosphere?
Atmosphere • Makeup • Nitrogen (78%) • Oxygen gas (21%) • Water vapor, argon gas, carbon dioxide, ozone (1%)
Particulate Matter • Pieces of solid material or liquid suspended in the atmosphere
Particulate Matter • No such thing as “clean” air • Earth constantly bombarded with debris, gasses, dust, and ashes • As air moves across the planet, picks up salt, pollen, spores, and dust
Particulate Matter • Human activity over the past years introduced gasses that do not occur naturally • Smoke and dust
Other Gasses • A lot of interest • Anthropogenic emissions- gasses and particulate that result from human activity • Leading to GLOBAL WARMING
Other Gasses • Get into groups of 3. Each group is assigned a gas. You are to research and present a 5 minute presentation on your gas. • Include: Where its found, health affects, problems in environment to cause it, how to prevent it, and any regulations.
Other Gasses • Create a worksheet or power point and present it to the class. 2 class days to work on this.
Air Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming
Warm-up • What other gas has been the most successful at being cleaned up?
Lesson Essential Question • What is the greenhouse effect and global warming?
Greenhouse Effect • Read through the packet and answer the questions.
Greenhouse Effect • Watch the movie and answer the questions
Warm-up • Explain Global warming and how we can fix it.
Lesson Essential Question • How can we detect, maintain and improve air quality?
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Reduce or avoid release of pollutants in the air
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Stop use of aerosols that use CFCs • Adequate ventilation in tightly constructed and heavily insulated buildings • Buildings checked for Radon
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Use exhaust fans to remove cooking oils, odors, solvents, and sprays from interior areas • Regularly clean and service furnaces, air conditioners, and ventilation systems
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Maintain all systems that remove sawdust, wood chips, paint spray, welding fumes, and dust to ensure they function correctly
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Keep gasoline and diesel engines properly tuned and serviced • Keep emissions systems in place and serviced on motor vehicles
Maintaining and Improving Air Quality • Observe all codes and laws regarding outdoor burning • Report suspicious toxic materials or conditions to police • Reduce use of pesticides • Use according to label
Regulating Air QualityLaws • Clean Air Act of 1963 • The Air Quality Act of 1967 • Clean Air Act of 1970 and 1990
Regulating Air QualityAgencies • Environmental Protection Agency • The Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards • Alternative fuels Data Center • Commission for Environmental Cooperation
Regulating Air QualityStandards • Clean Air Act’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards • Clean Air Act’s New Source Performance Standards
Regulating Air QualityStandards • The Prevention of Significant Deterioration • Air Guidance documents from the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation • Updated air quality standards for smog and particulate matter
Regulating Air QualityStandards • Using the information provided, read about each of the agencies, laws, etc and tell me what each one does on a separate sheet of paper. Each table gets a set of worksheets, pass them around. THESE WILL BE ON THE TEST, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THEM!!!!
