Although caw cut veneer is available most veneers are sliced by knife to a thickness of 0.6 - 0.8 mm.
The log is taken from the forest, debarked, trimmed and softened by placing in a steam bath for a number of hours or days, depending on the species of wood.
The log is then cut into veneer using one of the following methods: • Flat Slicing: The log is either squared or cut in half and mounted on a horizontal or vertical table. As the table moves a knife slices off a veneer • Rotary Cutting: The log is fixed in a lathe and rotated against a knife • Half Round Cutting: The log or half log is mounted off centre in the lathe
