  1. Particle physics: a global picture Report from the subcommittee to produce a new ICFA document Judy Jackson 15 July2011

  2. Paris, 24 July 2010 ICFA appointed a working group while Pier was marrying his daughter in California. ICFA made him chair. From ICFA meeting notes: “A steering committee was formed to provide guidance for an ICFA-produced document describing opportunities for particle physics across the world. It will show the physics opportunities, and give a list of currently open questions and possible future ways to answer them.” ICFA 18 February 2011

  3. Subcommittee members Pier Oddone, chair; Sachio Komamiya; Joachim Mnich InterAction members: Judy Jackson, James Gillies, Tim Meyer, Barbara Warmbein, Rika Takahashi ICFA 18 February 2011

  4. A global picture of particle physics Goal To strengthen worldwide support for particle physics as a global enterprise Strategy Create a print publication and an accompanying website to articulate a global vision for particle physics Distributed by ICFA, with cover letter from ICFA chair ICFA 18 February 2011

  5. Audiences Policy makers and opinion leaders Funding agencies Members of the media The global science community The science-interested public ICFA 18 February 2011

  6. Key messages The compelling science of 21st-century particle physics: the great questions Twenty-first century tools of particle physics create opportunities for discovery never before within reach. New results from existing experiments will shape the future direction of the field. ICFA 18 February 2011

  7. Key messages (2) The scale of today’s accelerators and experiments puts them beyond any single region’s ability to build or operate alone. Particle physics projects take shape as international endeavors from the start. In the global context of particle physics research, the whole exceeds the sum of the parts. The worldwide community has shown the ability to come together and produce results that resonate around the world. ICFA 18 February 2011

  8. Key messages (3) Ideas and technologies of particle physics enter the mainstream of society to transform the way we live and to inspire and train the next generation of scientists. Particle physics collaborations have enhanced significance as beacons for free and open exchange among men and women of science from all nations. They offer a model for cooperation from a field known for leadership in international collaboration. ICFA 18 February 2011

  9. DESY, 3-4 February 2011 Pier Oddone, Sachio Komamiya, James Gillies, Joachim Mnich, Tim Meyer Barbara Warmbein, Judy Jackson, Rika Takahashi ICFA 18 February 2011

  10. Outline: ~20 pages 0 One-paragraph distillation: Global particle physics in 60 seconds (2 pages) 1 Executive summary articulating key points (2 pages) 2 What do we know? (Particle physics in terms of space-time, matter, forces)(2 pages) 3 The great questions of 21st-century particle physics (4 pages) 4 What does it take to know?: vision, tools, laboratories (6 pages) 5 Innovation and benefits to society (4 pages) • Beacons for international collaboration (2 pages) ICFA 18 February 2011

  11. Proposed Great Questions • Is the Higgs particle the first step towards a whole new understanding? • What’s the matter with antimatter? • What message do neutrinos bring from the beginning of time? • Are there phenomena beyond our reach that leave their imprint on things we can measure? • Are there extra dimensions of space? • What are dark matter and dark energy – the unseen universe? • What is the trajectory of our universe? How did it evolve? • Is there a simple explanation for it all? ICFA 18 February 2011

  12. Schedule  3-4 February: DESY workshop, create detailed draft outline 18 February: present proposed plan, detailed outline to ICFA for input and approval March: subcommittee collects and writes content, tests on audiences 3-6 May: writing group met with Sandbox designers at CERN to incorporate input, develop layout, assign homework July: first full draft including layout Late August: ICFA approval, final edit 6 September: go to print, finalize website 3 October: present final report at ICFA seminar at CERN ICFA 18 February 2011

  13. Writers, designers met at CERN May 3-6 Created book map, overall design scheme Gave homework writing assignments Chose a new title • At Discovery’s Horizon became Beacons of Discovery • ADH: too many associations with Deep Water Horizon; used before for US LHC, a bit stale… • BoD: good imagery (drawing colleagues together, lighting the darkness, showing the way); amazingly, not used before (in particle physics reports, anyway) ICFA 18 February 2011

  14. Status as of 15 July In full swing, a work in progress Intro, Great Questions, What Do We Know?, International Collaboration sections are roughly done Innovation and Benefits still has holes, needs work Tools of Particle Physics section is most challenging: must balance regions, frontiers, projects, accelerators, experiments…. Expanded from 4-6 pages. Global photo quest in progress. ICFA 18 February 2011

  15. Status as of July 15 Copy ready for review by 25 July Pier presents “final” draft at 28 August ICFA meeting in Mumbai Final changes first week in September Goes to printer 6 September to be ready for ICFA seminar 3 October. ICFA 18 February 2011

  16. To do Finish “Tools” section (mostly photos with captions) Photo at KEK for “International Collaboration” section (Some of you will be in that one…) Finish “Innovations” section Develop website (Hi Kevin!) Editing, editing…. ICFA 18 February 2011

  17. Beacons of Discovery This is the right time to present a worldwide picture of particle physics.Beacons of Discovery takes the next step in articulating a globally shared vision for the future of particle physics. ICFA 18 February 2011
