  4. Central Assessment

  5. GCSE Five specific subjects at grade “A”. • Including,Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, English Language or Literature. • Double Science is acceptable alternative to separate sciences.

  6. A-Level • Chemistry and Biology are mandatory at Grade “A”. • The third subject can be anything the candidate finds interesting, worthwhile or enjoyable (except General Studies) at grade “B”. • An A/S at grade “B” anything(except General Studies)

  7. Personal Statement Who wrote it? How much plagiarism? What purpose does it serve? Raises points of interest. Are they true?

  8. School’s Statement Who wrote it? How much plagiarism? Well cut and paste. Has the referee any knowledge of the student? If so, who has come to this interview?

  11. The Interview Offers of places on the Dental Course are only made after a candidate has been considered at a formal interview.

  12. The Panel Admissions Tutor or Member of Admissions Executive is chair of the panel. One member of Staff or General Practitioner is the second panel member. On occasions two members of Staff.

  13. The Panel Opportunities are given to all new school staff to participate in interviews. Experience/training is given by observing sessions and discussing procedures prior to becoming a full panel member.

  15. General/Calming Questions How are the Examinations Going? What did you obtain in A/S exams? What are you doing about performance? What are you gaining from third subject? How did you find the move from GCSE’s to A/S?

  16. Interpersonal Skills What do you do with your spare time? What involvement do you have with teams? What have you gained from team work? How do you make a team work efficiently?

  17. Assessments Ability to communicate well? What differences do you see between School and HE? What potential problems do you anticipate? Ability to cope with BDS course? Emotionally? Consideration of practical skills or an appreciation of the need to develop such skills? Why Birmingham University and this course?

  19. Follow up In most cases a letter from me is written informing candidate of outcome of interview. A few are held back for a later decision. A generic feedback is given to all candidates who ask for it. Appeals are deal with through the university Director of Admissions.

  20. Follow up Confirmation of offers are sent by university admission office, detailing vaccinations and CRB requirements as well academic requirements.
