  4. Reasons For Growth? • Political/Social • Refugees! • -Currently, about 1 million people in Gaza are refugees assigned by the United Nations • -More refugees come to Gaza each year to escape violence between Israelis and Arabs • Since War on Gaza, there has been limited access to medical supplies, including birth control • Educational • Poor Education • -Due to poor economy, Gaza schools cannot afford materials • -Schools are also so crowded that a morning and afternoon session was created, and all students lose 2 hours of education as a result • -Less education=er fertility rate • Economical • Poor economy • -More children  more jobs per family  greater income • -More children  more people to help parents, including financially, when parents are older.

  6. …and Future Growth Population in 50 years: 10,436,567 people

  7. 2010 Population Pyramid of the Gaza Strip

  8. Changing Age Distribution of Gaza Today: Pre-Industrialized 2050: Industrializing

  9. Challenges Today Societal/ Health Societal/ Educational • Schools are over-crowded • To deal with this, some schools have created a morning session and afternoon session. As a result, students from either session lose 2 hours of their education every day • Salination of fresh water leading to dehydration • Water pollution leading to disease Environmental Economical • Soil degradation -Over-irrigation -There is no water that isn’t irrigated • Contamination of underground water sources • Pollution • 37% of population is unemployed • 80% of the population is below the poverty line • Limited exports due to soil degradation

  10. SOLUTIONS __________________  _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ • The UN proposed that medical supplies, food, and water be airlifted into the country, but Gaza is tightly guarded by Israel • Provide student exchange programs, financed by the U.S., for Gaza students to come to the U.S. for their education • Would provide a better education for Gaza students, which could lower birth rates • People could be hired to filter the water • Would provide jobs and limit the spread of disease • Dig more tunnels from Egypt to Gaza • Would provide jobs and allow for an easier passage for goods like food and medicine to enter the Gaza Strip • Station U.S. troops in Israel to limit violence • Could minimize the number of refugees fleeing to the Gaza Strip, and allow refugees in Gaza to return to their homeland ________

  11. Conclusion • Problem: Gaza’s, a less-developed country, soaring population is negatively affecting their environment, economy, education; overall standard of living. • Meanwhile, Canada, most of Europe, and other countries have stopped funding in Gaza, leaving it on its on for the most part. • The nation is slowly recovering as an industrializing country • It will take decades (at least 6) for Gaza to become a post-industrialized nation, and for the population to stabilize
