    2. Acknowledgements This series of PowerPoint Tips is part of the efforts of the Association for Institutional Research’s Best Visual Presentation Award Committee to help AIR members improve the quality of their presentations. Each year, the committee considers members’ presentations at the AIR Forum for the Best Visual Presentation Award. I would like to thank Meihua Zhai, editor of the Electronic AIR, for her encouragement for developing this series of PowerPoint Tips. Inclusion in the Electronic AIR ensures a wide distribution of the “Tips.” David Dickey, Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University, deserves special thanks and recognition. He has graciously allowed me to use one of his PowerPoint slides for this PowerPoint Tip. Nancy, my wife, deserves special recognition for suggesting the phrase “PowerPoint Phuzz.” Riverside, CA January 17, 2006

    3. Introduction The PowerPoint Tips series is part of the efforts of the Association for Institutional Research’s Best Visual Presentation Award Committee to help AIR members improve the quality of their presentations. Each year, the committee considers members’ presentations at the AIR Forum for the Best Visual Presentation Award. These PowerPoint Tips will help AIR members create and present better and more visually attractive presentations. The use of PowerPoint is “de rigueur” in most professional presentations and is a very effective tool for presenting information to medium and large size audiences. However, poorly designed slides and those containing unnecessary visual elements or PowerPoint Phuzz1 detract from the ability of the slides to help the presenter communicate. The information in these slides is lost among the distracting visual elements. This PowerPoint tip will demonstrate a few techniques for quickly and easily removing Phuzz. It is accompanied with a practice file. Use this file to practice the techniques demonstrated in the “Tips.” Print the “Tips” and then use it as your guide when using the practice file. Alternately, the PowerPoint Tips slides and the practice file can be viewed together while using the practice file.

    4. Introduction (cont’d) Future PowerPoint tips will cover topics such as data table and graph design, the best background color for a presentation, and the correct size of text. The AIR PowerPoint Tips series is intended to be viewed on a computer monitor and not projected on a large screen. Two versions are available, a Macintosh and Windows version2. While the steps and commands are exactly the same, both versions are provided for anyone who prefers one interface over another.
