Welcome to Algebra for All – Year 2 Day 1. Ice Breaker Find the table tent with the matching representation of your function. Meet your table mates and share with them the function family to which your function belongs.
E N D
Ice Breaker • Find the table tent with the matching representation of your function. • Meet your table mates and share with them the function family to which your function belongs. • As a group, come up with the remaining representations (verbal, tabular, graphical, algebraic and real-world) • Find your function family group and share your representations. • Be prepared to share one of the function families with the large group using the ELMO and the TI-84.
Today’s Goals • Overview of Year 2 of AFA • Focus: Math Content - Shapes of Algebra • Why Take the Time to use SOA? • Begin Team Planning
Year 2 of AFA • Dan Meyer Video • Goals of Year 2
Year 2 of AFA • CONTENT - Teachers deepen understanding of functions-based algebra with connections to the Common Core State Standards and the High School Content Expectations and plan beginning of year unit around the Shapes of Algebra
Year 2 of AFA • PEDAGOGY - Teachers build pedagogical capacity to meet the learning needs of all students lessons, selecting through commitment to participation in a professional learning community that includes social networking and attending monthly meetings, preparing and observing classroom rich mathematical tasks for their students and maintaining the cognitive level of the task, and the use of technology in their teaching and their student learning
Year 2 of AFA • ASSESSMENT - Teachers use formative assessment, such as student work and verbal responses, to inform instruction to meet learning needs of diverse learners
The First Weeks of Class • At your table, share with each other what your first week or two of algebra class looks like. • What impact to the course will there be by taking the first week or two to complete the Shapes of Algebra activity? • Discuss ways to make this happen.
MiVU Update Watch the MiVU video
Shapes of Algebra • What parts of the activity will you use? • What modifications will you need to make? • What families are missing or should not be included? • What additional parts would you add to the activity? • How will you incorporate technology and student-center learning?
Team Planning • At the end of this 3 day session, you should have the first week or two of algebra class planned out using the Shapes of Algebra. • Start your team planning now with a focus on CONTENT!
Team Sharing • Prepare and present a “progress report” outlining the important issues you are addressing
Homework • Read the article Thinking through a Lesson for our next meeting
Wrap-up • Complete the evaluation • Thanks for your interest and participation in the AFA project! • In the next session we will focus on Instruction!
Today’s Goals • Review Thinking through a Lesson • Focus on instructional techniques • Introduce Common Core • Continue Team Planning
Ah Ha and Oh No!!! • What issues or insights have emerged since we last met?
Common Core What do you need to know? How does it relate to the Algebra for All project?
Debrief Thinking Through a Lesson • Each member of the group will be responsible for learning and sharing one section of the article. They will meet with others who are responsible for the same section to ensure they understand the critical ideas. Then they will share their information with their group.
Classroom Organization • How does classroom organization support instruction? • Grouping • Why • When • How • Techniques

Team Planning • Continue your team planning now with a focus on PROCESS.
Team Sharing • Prepare and present a “progress report” outlining the important issues you are addressing
Homework Cup Stacking Activity • Read through the activity so you understand it • Think how you would implement it in your classroom
Wrap-up • Complete the evaluation • Thanks for your interest and participation in the AFA project! • In the next session we will focus on Assessment!
Today’s Goals • Compare/contrast/apply formative and summative assessment • Continue Team Planning • Post work on LearnPort
Ah Ha and Oh No!!! • What issues or insights have emerged since we last met?
Assessing Student Work • In your group develop a rubric for the Cup Stacking Activity. • Create a rubric acceptable to the whole group • Working alone apply the rubric to student work • Working in your group find a consensus for each students’ work. • Debrief in a whole group setting.
Formative and Summative Assessment • Discussion comparing and contrasting formative and summative assessment.
