  2. Qualifications Required • In order to become and author a person must have: • A good understanding of language, sentence structure and grammar. • The ability to write creatively and with imagination. • Must be able to handle criticism • Must be able to use a computer

  3. Where to Study • Anyone can be an author and a college degree isn't required in order to become one • Although, a degree in English or literature might help • DCU, UCD, DIT, NUI Maynooth, DKIT and most colleges would also have English courses.

  4. Average Salary • The average salary of an author is 4,500 euro a year. • 33% lower than the average industrial wage • Most authors need a second job in order to sustain a living • A lot have writing as more of a hobbie, but successful authors make a very secure living.

Case Study - John Green • John Michael Green was born on the 24th August 1977 • He grew up in Orlando, Florida and attended Indian Springs High School which was a boarding school in Alabama. • He then attended Kenyon College where he double majored in English and Religious Studies. • He worked for Booklist Magazine as a publishing assistant and production editor while writing his first novel 'Looking for Alaska'. • Since then he has written 3 other solo books, and 2 collaborations with fellow young adult writers such as David Levithan and Maureen Johnson. • He has won many awards for his work such as the 2006, 2007 Michael L. Printz Award, the 2009 Edgar Award, the 2010 Corine Literature Prize and has been on the New York Times Bestsellers list multiple times.
