Review of Spirit’s Work • The work of Holy Spirit is seen in two categories: (1) INSTRUCTING (2) BLESSING
Spirit & Messianic Revelation • Ezekiel 36 - 37 New life of Messianic hope • Spirit within = Obey message (36:26-27) • Prophet spake “the word of Jehovah” (37:4) • Dry bones became covered with flesh • “Prophesy unto wind” (breath/spirit - 37:9) • Breath of word brought life to dry bones • Principle: Spirit’s words bring life (37:14f) • When Messiah came, Spirit to bring words of life - Gospel (Isaiah 59:20-21)
Isaiah 61:1-3 1The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2to proclaim the year of Jehovah’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

Isaiah Speaks of Spirit & Salvation • Isaiah 61:1-3 Prophecy of coming Zion • Spirit to cause preaching of “good tidings” • Dual effect of message foretold: • “Year of Jehovah’s favor” results in relief & deliverance of those in affliction & distress • “Day of vengeance of our God” to others • Same message bringing blessings to godly brings condemnation to disobedient • Fulfillment stated by Jesus (Luke 4:16f)
Joel 2:28-32 28And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit. 30And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah cometh. 32And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Jehovah shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape, as Jehovah hath said, and among the remnant those whom Jehovah doth call.
Spirit & Salvation in Joel 2:28-32 • Spirit to be poured forth on “all flesh” • Benefits brought as a result • Judgment also brought as result • With the Spirit would come deliverance or salvation • Conditioned upon calling on Lord’s name • Fulfillment declared in Acts 2
14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, saying, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear unto my words. 15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose; seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16but this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel: 17And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams: 18Yea and on My servants and on My handmaidens in those days Will I pour forth of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show wonders in the heaven above, And signs on the earth beneath; Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: 20The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the day of the Lord come, That great and notable day. 21And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:14-21
Joel 2 Fulfilled in Acts 2 • Crowd had ask, “What meaneth this?” • Peter answers saying the events of that day were the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy • Evidence of Spirit’s being poured forth seen in miraculous manifestation • If Spirit poured forth, effect must be present • “And it shall be that…” (Effect must be...) • …whosoever shall call on name of Lord… • ...shall be saved” (salvation is gift of Spirit)
Confirmed by Remainder of Acts 2 • Jesus identified as Messiah of prophecy • Suffering & death of the Christ followed by resurrection & exaltation • Received of the Father “the promise of the Holy Spirit” as evidenced that day • Convicted crowd saw they helped murder the Christ & asked, “What shall we do?” • Told to repent & be baptized in name of the Lord “for” or “unto” remission of your sins • Result:Shall receive gift of the Holy Spirit
More About Promised Gift of H.S. • If baptized for or unto remission of sins & receive gift of Holy Spirit, what is gift? • If this promise (gift) is to Jew & Gentile, even as many as the Lord calls, what is gift? • If Peter then exhorted audience to save self, what is gift they were exhorted to receive? • If those who responded to offer of gift were baptized (for remission of sin), what is gift? • Saved = Added to Lord = Receive gift • compare same point made in Galatians 3:8-14
Concerning Prophesy of Salvation in Old Testament • 1 Peter 1:9 -12 Prophets spoke of salvation • Prophets spoke of “grace” that would come • Two elements noted of salvation foretold • Sufferings of Christ • Glories that should follow them • Message not for prophets’ time, but future • Salvation announced &“grace” provided by work of Spirit through the Gospel
How Does Spirit Work On Sinner? • 1 Thess. 1:5 Assured the word was of God • John 16:8 Convicted the world of sin • 2 Thess. 2:13 Brought sinner to salvation • chose, sanctified & called by means of truth • Titus 3:3-7 Saved by renewing of Spirit • compare John 3:5, 1 Peter 1:22 & Eph. 5:26 • Romans 8:13 Causes sin to be put away • Everything the Spirit does to bring sinner to salvation is done by means of persuasion
Many Denominational Errors on Subject Abound • Pentecostals teach that sinner is brought to salvation by baptism of Spirit with tongues • Charismatic / Holiness doctrine says sinner saved then given “second work of grace” • Calvinism teaches salvation accomplished by “irresistible grace” from Holy Spirit • Regeneration, repentance & faith taught as imposed by Spirit before man can will • Deny free will-or-Response to persuasion
