GE patented 4-element Vector pyro-electric sensor provides: Multi-dimensional signals Effective detection coverage area via 4 interactions Spatial discrimination, significantly reducing the probability of a false alarm source appearing in both channels in the same manner Time discrimination, determining the motion of a signal and its direction as channels are shifted in time Vector Pyro - direction of motion Twice the number of verification points combined with the channels’ shift in time proves that the IR source was IN MOTION!
Conventional pyro’s have 2 elements, connected in opposed polarity, providing a one-dimensional signal (value) Sophisticated pyro’s have more elements, connected in a variety of patterns, providing multi-dimensional signals Possible lay-outs for multi-element pyro-electric sensors: The difference in the structure of the elements affects the performance of the motion detector in 3 ways (see next slide) Multi-dimensional signals (1) GE patented 4-element Vector pyro. (2) Interleaved structure
Radiated IR energy is projected by the optics of the motion detector onto the element surface area of the sensor. (1) GE Vector pyros add sensitive elements which preserve the full interaction between radiated IR energy and element area, resulting in maximum signal strength (2) By dividing the area of a sensitive element into separate elements, the IR energy received per element is also divided and the signal-to-noise ratio decreases. Effective detection coverage (1) GE patented 4-element Vector pyro (2) Interleaved structure More elements required to maintain the reliability in alarm-decision
A false-alarm source will interact with the sensitive surface area of the pyro and the corresponding electrical output signals of the pyro (1) GE Vector pyros spatially separate the sensitive elements of the pyro, significantly reducing the probability of a false alarm source appearing in both channels in the same manner (and producing identical signals) (2) When elements are interleaved, a false alarm source is always visible in both channels simultaneously, generating identical signals and verification of one channel with another cannot help to eliminate these signals Spatial discrimination
The IR radiation of an intruder is projected onto the sensitive area of the pyro’s and the resulting phase-related signals. Note that since the signals on the left are shifted in time, they can easily be distinguished from the in-phase signals of item 2 (spatial discrimination), whereas on the right side of figure 4, the two channels still remain in phase. (1) With GE Vector pyros the intruder interaction with the element surface area at four points in time instead of two (2). Twice the number of verification points combined with the channels shift in time unmistakably means that the IR source was IN MOTION! False alarm sources, including stationary thermal sources, can never generate the unique phase-relation between the elements of the GE Vector multi-element pyro and can therefore easily be eliminated. Time discrimination

V²E signal processing Different sources different patterns clear distinction less false alarms
False alarm sources, including stationary thermal sources, can never generate the unique phase-relation between the elements of the GE Vector pyro and can therefore easily be eliminated. The sophisticated algorithms, using pattern recognition, can even determine the direction of motion of the intruder V2E Signal Processing
V2E signal processing stop false alarms • Different IR sources generate different signal patterns • Control the nuisance signals via pattern analysis • Vector Verified Enhanced signal processing discriminates: • Motion events from 2. Non-motion events • (cross-walks, under crawl, (thermal non-motion, air-turbulence, white-light, intermittent walks) electronic interference, shock, …)
