Setting and Characters • Setting- Eumaeus’ hut • Eumaeus is a swineheard who lives nearby to Odysseus’ home in Ithaka. Eumaeus had become a sort of father figure to Telemachus in Odysseus’ absencse. • Telemachus has safely returned to Ithaka and avoided the sutiors’ ambush contrary to their plans.
Setting and Characters • Odysseus is talking with Eumaeus, however Odysseus is disguised as a stranger. • Athena, the gray eyed goddess, talks to Odysseus outside the hut and lifts his disgise so Telemachus can see his father in full glory, as Telemachus had been waiting for so many years to see.
Summary • Telemachus visits Eumaeus to find him with a stranger (Odysseus in disguise) • Telemachus visited with Eumaeus before returning home to obtain an update about his mother Penelope • Odysseus speaks against Telemachus’ great fear of the suitors • Eumaeus goes to secretly tell Penelope of Telemachus’ return
Summary • Athena motions for Odysseus to come outside the hut and tells him to plan to kill the suitors with Telemachus • Athena lifts his disguise and Telemachus is thunderstruck. He even goes so far as to call Odysseus a god, which Odysseus denounces. • Father and son get to planning how they will take down the suitors together • News of Telemachus’ return reaches Penelope
Summary • Antinoos is irate that Telemachus has safely returned. • Eumaeus safely returns to the hut where Telemachus and Odysseus are eating.
