  3. The Government Of Ancient China • The government of Ancient China was monarchy • The citizens of China were ruled by an emperor which kept order • Although the government enforced harsh punishments, this kept the people in line, and led to a safer community

  4. Buddhism • Enforced the eight fold path and the middle way- avoid all uncontrolled desire and satisfaction • Starts to search for the meaning of life • The goal: to attain enlightenment and to enter nirvana

  5. Confucianism • Created by: Kong Fuzi • More of a philosophy than a religion • The key was to solve China’s disorder • To achieve social harmony • Ren: goodness • Believed in unequal relationship-> made people feel inferior or superior to one another

  6. Culture • The citizens were expected to know China’s history • Respect and honor their ancestors • Family was the model for political life • Women were always below their husbands and their fathers

  7. Social Hierarchy • China: • Emperor • Burecrats: poilshed speech; culutral sophistication • Landed Class:Seen as a threat to the government because they could hire their own military and avoid paying taxes • Peasants: were more vulnerable to famine and natural disasters • Merchants:They make money off of products they did not make; were not productive The class you fall into determines what you succeed in at the academy

  9. FOREIGN POLICIES • The Great Wall of China: was built to protect China from neighboring countries • Had harsh punishments for anyone who challenged the emperor • They started building the empire by launching a military campaign: there is evidence of paranoia
