  1. DO NOW JOURNAL Hindus and Buddhists believe in reincarnation. If you believed in reincarnation, what form would you like to reborn as? Would you be a human or some sort of an animal? Why? • Grab a piece of paper (from the pile on top of iPad cart) • Write a brief THANK YOU note to the AWOD leaders who came into your class (names are below) • When finished, begin Journal. Period 3: Steph, Clare, Nicole, & Tayler Period 4: Annacat & Tim Period 5: Maeve & Madison Period 7: Riley, Kirsten, Charlotte, & Annie Period 1: Mia, Kelsey, Steve, & Aiden

  2. Journal Do you feel like there is a “caste system” in the United States? Why or why not? Think about classes and economics (upper class, middle class, lower class/poor) Do people in one class have more advantages over people in another class?

Key Vocabulary*Write notes down on back of your “WORLD RELIGIONS NOTES & KEY FACTS” page* • DISCRIMINATION: • unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things • usually based on the grounds of race, class, age, or gender • HYPOCRISY: • practice of claiming to have moral standard of beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform to • PREJUDICE: • preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience • harm or injury that results or may result from some action or judgment *preconceived: an idea or opinion formed before having the evidence for its truth or usefulness *conform: comply with, follow along

Caste System • A complex social system in Hindu culture. • Based on a person’s birth and occupation. • The person can only marry and socialize within their own caste. • Caste cannot be changed until rebirth/reincarnation. • Hindus aim to achieve good karma and to fulfill dharma and duties in an effort to move up in caste ranking during their next life.

  6. Questions for Discussion • What is the caste system based upon? • How are you “assigned” a caste? • Can you change your caste? How? • If one’s karma is bad, what might happen? • How could you enter a higher caste? • Who belongs to the upper class? What professions do they hold? • Who belongs to the middle class? What professions do they hold? • Who belongs to the lower class? What professions do they hold?

Debriefing • If you lived during this time, how difficult do you think it would have been to follow the strict rules of the caste system? • Why do you think all people participate(d) in the caste system? • Do you think people question(ed) the caste system? Why or why not? • How do economics and religion relate to one another?
