Caste System • A complex social system in Hindu culture. • Based on a person’s birth and occupation. • The person can only marry and socialize within their own caste. • Caste cannot be changed until rebirth/reincarnation. • Hindus aim to achieve good karma and to fulfill dharma and duties in an effort to move up in caste ranking during their next life.
Questions for Discussion • What is the caste system based upon? • How are you “assigned” a caste? • Can you change your caste? How? • If one’s karma is bad, what might happen? • How could you enter a higher caste? • Who belongs to the upper class? What professions do they hold? • Who belongs to the middle class? What professions do they hold? • Who belongs to the lower class? What professions do they hold?
Debriefing • If you lived during this time, how difficult do you think it would have been to follow the strict rules of the caste system? • Why do you think all people participate(d) in the caste system? • Do you think people question(ed) the caste system? Why or why not? • How do economics and religion relate to one another?
