EDU 570 Objectives • To introduce and help teachers know and understand 2 week fraction unit • To motivate teachers to help students mathematize as they work with fractions
Brain Activation!Please solve this puzzle as we begin. • The first 2/5 of whole + the last 1/8 of symmetry. • The first 1/3 of sum + the first 25% of half + the first 3/8 of quotient inverted, then subtract the initial 1/8 + abbreviation for long division. • The first half of week. • The terminating .5 of last + the abbreviation for universal design + the first 1/4 of year. • The last 50% of Unicom + the first 3/5 of money. • The initial 1/7 of combine + the last 2/9 of numerator + the second 1/11 of denominator. • The last 40% of first + 3/3 of a synonym for “plus” + the last 4/5 of yards. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ?

Why should we study common core standards?

Common Core Standards • The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. • …process standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections • …adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding (comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations and relations), procedural fluency (skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately), and productive disposition (habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one’s own efficacy).
Common Core Standards • Schedule for School District of Newberry County • Taught the 2 weeks after PASS testing • All third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers will teach third grade unit on fractions • Begin with unit fractions • Understand non-unit fractions (common fractions) are built from unit fractions. • Understand area (hooked together), set (individual things grouped), and linear models (number line or cubes linked) www.corestandards.org
Big Ideas • Unit fractions • Common fractions • Comparing fractions
How can we facilitate learning? • Build background knowledge • Provide experiences for students to negotiate meaning • Conceptual knowledge • Models and hands on manipulations • Math Congress
How do we engage students? • Authentic problems • Student solutions requested • Student explanations for thinking • Student paraphrasing of processes
What materials do you need? • Simple materials available in most classrooms • Student creation of models
Last year four groups went on local field trips. 4 students went to the fire station. 5 went to the Newberry Opera House. 8 children went to Newberry College. 5 went to the library. The cafeteria made 17 sub sandwiches. 3 sandwiches were delivered to the fire station. 4 were taken to the Opera House. 7 subs were for the College visitors. The final 3 sandwiches were given to the library. The next day, students complained that the food was not fairly distributed. What do you think? Which group would you have liked to be in for lunch? Sub Sandwich Problem
