Module Enhancements • Try different types of crystal formation using baking soda, kosher salt, rock salt, brown sugar, and so forth. • Relate real world objects to crystal shapes. • Discussion of different types of chemical bond. • Relate crystals to minerals.
Engineering Design • Design ways to make improvement on existing architectural structures based on the seven shapes of crystal. • Design a better classification system on minerals and rocks based on the seven shapes of crystal.
Scientific Inquiry • What variables affect the hardness, shape, and color of a crystal? • What condition affect the quality of a crystal? • What variables affect the rate of the formation of a crystal?
Ethics • Instant gratification vs. delayed gratification. • The importance of following health and safety instructions. - Always have supervision. - Pay attention to safe usage of chemicals. - Follow warning and caution signs.
Modification 1 • Age Group: Elementary • Engineering Design - Design objects based on the seven shapes of crystal as well as other geometric shapes. • Scientific Inquiry - Identify repeated patterns in nature. • Ethics - Safety such as material handling, no drinking and eating, and so forth.
Modification 2 • Age Group: High School • Engineering Design - Design a system to analyze fake diamonds from natural real diamonds. • Scientific Inquiry - Discussion on molecular structures. • Ethics - Authenticity of diamonds.
