  2. Living with Dad • In 1923 Douglas suffered from an emotional breakdown. • Douglas was living with her dad and his second wife Lillias. • Douglas was unhappy living with her father. • One night her father found Douglas bed empty.

  3. Leaving the Herald • Doctor diagnosed Douglas with nerve fatigued. • Douglas left the Herald to go write fiction stories. • Her first story was sold in 1924 to Black Mask. • Douglas would use the Everglades in her stories.

  4. Stories • In 16 years Douglas published 57 stories. • When Douglas started out writing she got paid $ 500 for each story. At one point her pay for her stories was $1200. • She bought land from Henry and Bertha Schulz. Also so did some of her friends.

  5. The House • Douglas hires George Hyde to build her house. • Douglas house was very open. • In 1926 the house was hit by a hurricane and it held up. $ 250 dollars was the insurance settlement for the repairs on her house. • Her house was way in off the road and this gave her privacy for her writings.

  6. More Stories • In the first year living the house, 20 serialized novels and 437 short stories were published. • Two of her stories were selected for publication in O. Henry Memorial Award collections. • A few years later it won another recognition but this time it was for the play.

  7. More Stories Cont. • In 1977 Wellesley College officials presented her with alumni award for nature writing.

  8. Conclusion • This whole chapter was on Douglas stories and as you can see she wrote a lot of stories. This chapter has mostly passages from her stories. Every thing in Douglas life has shaped her writing. • South Florida she believed, not only provided material for her but inspired people to be creative.
