Navigating the College Environment • Understanding the differences between college and high school – skills to make a successful transition College Survival 101 Don’t just get through it…excel at it Physical navigation of the campus Resource awareness Take ownership over your own future/ take responsibility Help students “fit in” Being proactive
On Course – Related Chapters Chapter 1: Getting on Course to Your Success Chapter 2: Accepting Personal Responsibility Chapter 3: Discovering Self-Motivation Chapter 4: Mastering Self-Management Chapter 6: Employing Interdependence Chapter 8: Developing Emotional Intelligence
In-Class Activities • Text message scavenger hunt • Road map to success • Predicament Pickle • Predicament Pickle Adaptation (Instead of “good idea”/ “bad idea” you could have “acceptable in college” / “acceptable only in high school” / “acceptable in high school and college” etc.) • Develop an activity using the quadrants (try: quadrant four square) • Goal setting ring toss • Stress balloon pop • One minute paper: what will I do differently next week to navigate better?
In-Class Activities (From Discussion) • Student panel (make sure they discusses successes AND challenges) • Bring in a faculty member • Dean of Students (or rep) to discuss conduct • Write a letter to yourself (where do you want to be personally, academically, etc) – give back last day of semester • Discuss the repercussions of personal actions (eg. If you get and MIP)
