VISUAL ARTS STANDARDS • 2.2 Plan and create works of art that reflect complex ideas, such as distortion, color theory, arbitrary color, scale, expressive content, and real versus virtual. • 2.4 Demonstrate in their own works of art a personal style and an advanced proficiency in communicating an idea, theme, or emotion.
VOCABULARY • Rhythm = A repetition of movement, like in music or dance. It is aregular or harmonious pattern created by repeating one or more of the elements of art.
The pieces of an artwork can replicate the musical experience of rhythm visually. Repeated objects can set up a rhythm, similar to a beat, that causes one’s eye to dance around the artwork.
VOCABULARY • Unity = Tying all the pieces of an artwork together (usually through a common element, such as a common color or shape used throughout the work)
MATERIALS Various paper boards (such as mat board, chipboard, tag board, and cardboard), wood sticks, markers, colored pencils, glue

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS • Sculpture has a sense of unity by repeating the same shapes and colors. • Student has achieved a sense of rhythm by having several focal points and drawing the eye around the work. • Sculpture has significant relief (at least 1”)
FOR TODAY: BRAINSTORM! • In your mini sketchbook draw at least 10 shape ideasand 10 pattern ideas (in color, using colored pencil and marker) for your sculpture. • Try several color schemes and arrangements.
