What’s the big deal? • The main cause of accidents: carelessness • Other causes include: • Lack of knowledge • Not following directions • Equipment malfunction • By learning proper procedures, we can prevent accidents from occuring.
Wear proper clothing • Goggles, aprons, gloves • No loose clothing or dangling jewelry • Pull back long hair • No open-toed shoes
Before starting the lab • Examine your equipment: • Glassware not chipped, cracked or broken • Wires not exposed or frayed • Read the directions • Ask questions if you do not understand what to do
Proper conduct is a must • Walk carefully • No horseplay • Stay at your station unless getting materials or cleaning up • No food, drinks, make-up at lab stations • Do not taste chemicals • Keep your lab areas neat
In case of an accident… • Know where the following are located: • Eyewash station • Fire extinguisher • Fire blanket • Emergency shower • I need to know about it immediately, no matter how minor • If you start to feel sick or dizzy, I need to know this as well
