43. Manifest Destiny:War with Mexico • Using the Santa Fe Trail, many Americans moved into Mexican territory (NM, AZ, CA).

War with Mexico I tried playing nice . . . • President Polk offered to buy territory from Mexico (twice.) • Mexico said no. • Mexican & American soldiers clashed between Texas and Mexico (1846). • Polk asked for declaration of war. • War split the U.S. public. Mexico has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil!
