Three Systems EB and WB I-90: Approx 9 miles. Operation to begin the summer of 2011: Currently under construction. EB and WB SR-520: Approx 8 miles. In operations since November, 2010 NB I-5: Approx 7 miles. In operations since August, 2010 Sign Structure Location
Over Lane Sign Indications Legal Speed Limit: Speed in the HOV can be different the in the GP Lanes Merge Indications: Advance warning for lane closures Lane Closed to Traffic: Indicates a closed lane Lane Open: Used after a closed lane is reopened, not normally displayed Also used in conjunction with the Lane Closed sign to show which lanes are open
Some Typical Displays Free flow traffic, no problems ahead Lane closure due to an accident (or road work) Reduced speed due to heavy traffic volume or a problem upstream
System Costs • System costs are impacted by several components • Signing and Sign Structures - Considerations: Number of lanes that must be covered; Alignment & configuration of the roadway; Operational objectives. • High band communications - Fiber • Detection - dense detection and high quality data is needed (Speed and Occupancy) • Verification – Cameras & software • Control Software • Ongoing: Operations and Maintenance
What’s Next • Go-Live for the I-90 System in the Summer of 2011 • Complete an evaluation of the impacts of the systems on I-5 and SR520 on travel time reliability and accidents. • Develop criteria for determining where best to implement urban ATM and how to prioritize the identified needs: Several more potential locations need considering. • Look at non-urban applications: • Mountain Pass Chain-up areas • Traffic control for bridge closures
