If you are upgrading from an early SAS • As with any install on Windows, be sure to back-up your machine before you install software. • I use the Windows control panel to remove all SAS programs before I upgrade. This gets rid of all the old programs that SAS provided but keeps my work intact. Rerun the uninstaller repeatedly until there are no components of SAS left. After uninstalling everything I reboot. After rebooting I find the SAS and also SASHomefolders in the Programs Folder and delete them and then reboot again. You should not have saved into that folder but if you saved your work there obviously you want to move it before deleting the folder. • This process takes a while and in theory is not necessary but it helps to assure that you have a completely clean install of SAS.

  3. JAVA • SAS will want to use JAVA. Get it here: java.com/en/. If you think that you have the latest version (7 Update 25), you can use the Do I have Java? hyperlink on the page to double-check.

  4. Installing SAS • The next slides show you how to check what version of Windows you are running. Keep in mind that SAS 9.4 only works correctly on 64 bit Windows Professional or better versions of Windows 7 or 8. SAS 9.3 will work on some 32 bit version. All Home editions of Windows will have problems running SAS. • To confirm that your machine will work look here: http://support.sas.com/supportos/list • Use the following notes to check to see if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit Windows and then download the correct version of SAS.

  8. Order SAS • You can order 32 bit SAS 9.3 or 64 bit 9.4 here: itservices.stanford.edu/service/softwarelic/sas

  9. After paying • You will get an email with the link to download the SAS Downloader Manger. The Downloader Manger is a program that will go out to SAS and pull a copy of the installation depot onto your machine. • Downloading the Download Manager will take a couple minutes.

  10. Downloading SAS • You start the Download Manager to pull the 14 GB SAS installer depot onto your machine. There will be fill in the blank where you can type in the Order Number and SAS installation Key. If you have used a previous version of SAS on the installation machine the numbers will be wrong. Go back to the web store and look at your order. The values will be in red when you review your order. Get the correct number here The download can take HOURS off campus. Use a wired connection on campus if you can.

  11. After using the Download Manager • After the Download Manger runs for a couple hours you will have the SAS install depot on your machine. Double click the Setup.exe icon to install SAS using the following slides to guide you. The install can take an hour on a slow machine. The depot folder will have more than 14 Gig of data. Keep if until you are certain that you have everything you need. Then delete if you need room.

  12. The following slides show you how to install. If you forget to install part of SAS double-click the setup program to add parts later. With Vista or Windows 7 right click setup.exe and Run as administrator…. Double click in XP.

  13. You can use whatever path you want.

  14. Checking this significantly slows down Excel load time.

  15. It is your choice on if to send them your hardware info.

  16. Running R inside SAS • It is easy to configure SAS to run R programs and return the results as if the code was actually SAS code. Currently (Sept 03, 2013) SAS only integrates with R 2.15. So, if you have a modern version of R you will need to downgrade to version 2.15.3 (aka “Security Blanket”). • You need administrator rights to enable this. See the next slide for details.

  17. How to Run R code inside SAS • Verify you are running “Security Blanket” • Find you SASV9.CFG file. It will likely be here: C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en\sasv9.cfg • Open it in a text editor. Do NOT use Microsoft Word. • Add this line to the beginning of the file: -RLANG • Save the file to your desktop. • Go to the folder containing the sasv9.cfg file change the name of the file to be sasv9.cfgOLD. You need administrator rights to do this. • Move the edited version of sasV9.cfg file into that folder. You need administrator rights to do this.

  18. After Installing • The next slides give advice on what to do after installing SAS. • Patch your software • Set your windows so it will show file suffixes. • If you use Microsoft Office set it to show you file paths.

  20. Installing patches • After downloading patches. Start the SAS deployment Wizard:

  22. Browse to the folder where you saved the downloads.

  23. Stay up to Date • Ask SAS to email you when they have patched stuff: support.sas.com/techsup/news/tsnews.html

  24. Can You Recognize File Types? • Windows adds a period and a suffix to the names of files to indicate what program uses the file. By default, the suffix is hidden. Fix that and you will be sure to import the right file. No suffix shown.

  28. The Path Says Where Files are Found When you want to find a file to analyze on your PC, you need to know the path. Click here… … and the path is shown as: C:\Projects\Talks\R4Clinicians

Click to return to installer slide. 32 bit vs 64 bit Excel • Office 2010 can run in 32 bit and native 64 bit mode on a machine running 64 bit Windows 7. • 64 bit SAS and 32 bit Office do not integrate. • By default Office will install the 32 bit version. • With 32 bit office you need to tweak SAS to get it to load Excel files or run 64 bit Office instead.

Installing 64 bit Office • If you do not use Add-ons to office (like the SAM and PAM for microarray analysis plug ins) then you can install and run the 64 bit version of Excel. • If needed uninstall the 32 bit version of Office 2010. • Find the x64 folder on the Office DVD and run the setup program.

  31. Click to return to installer slide. If you must use 32 bit Office • If you must use 32 bit office on a 64 bit machine send a help request to SAS and they will send you advice on how to use the PC Files Server to access Excel files: support.sas.com/ctx/supportform/createForm

  32. If you plan to use Excel With XP, click the Windows Start menu and choose Run In the dialog type regedit and click ok. With Vista or Windows 7 search for and open regedit. • Open up the tree to this path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► SOFTWARE ► Microsoft ► Jet ► 4.0 ► Engines ► Excel • Double click TypeGuessRows. • Type 0, that is zero not the letter o, in the DWORD editor and click ok. • If you can find them, repeat for these paths HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► Software ► Microsoft ► Office ► 12.0 ► Access Connectivity Engine ► Engines ► Excel HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► Software ► Microsoft ► Office ► 14.0 ► Access Connectivity Engine ► Engines ► Excel HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► Software ► Wow6432Node ► Microsoft ► Office ► 12.0 ► Access Connectivity Engine ► Engines ► Excel • Microsoft ACCESS will silently change this setting! • So watch this setting if you use ACCESS.

  33. Using File Paths You can use Windows Explorer to find your files or you can add a button to MS Office products to show the path with a single click. With Office 2007 or 2010 it is easy to add a button, which will show up here, to show you the path when it is pushed.
