History • University-Industry Relations Office • Chancellor’s Task Force on University- • Business Relations (2003) • “Coordinate the various activities occurring on campus related to business and industry, and act as the ‘front door’ to the university”
OCR Objectives Create awareness of the resources at UW-Madison for the business community Facilitate connections between companies/organizations/entrepreneurs and the university Communicate and coordinate with campus partners serving business and industry
UW Business Assistance • Student recruitment • Professional development • Faculty and staff expertise • Technology transfer • Global competency • Support for entrepreneurs
Examples of Research Centers on Campus • Center for Dairy Research • Biotechnology Center • Engine Research Center • Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center • Zeeh Pharmaceutical Experiment Station
Examples of Nanotech-Focused Research Centers on Campus • Advanced Materials Industrial Consortium • Center for Nanotechnology • Materials Research Science and Engineering Center • Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center
Role for Legislature • Provide support to existing programs, collaborations and networks that connect WI businesses with research and resources • Support angel and early stage VC tax credits to encourage high tech ventures such as those based on nanotechnology
Discourage Wisconsin-specific regulation of nanotechnology and instead participate in Federal regulation activities and discussion • Wisconsin already behind other states in patenting nanotechnology • Federal regulation likely forthcoming • EPA addressing health and safety issues
Role of OCR in State Clearinghouse for Nanotechnology • Leverage existing knowledge of campus resources and connections with the business community • Partner with Clearinghouse to showcase state-of-the-art research at UW Campuses and other educational institutions • Encourage/support academic-industry partnerships
