Lesson 1.5 Adding Integers
What is the Definition of an opposite? Example If a car goes forward 20 ft and then backs up 20 ft, it ends where it started. Using opposite integers, you can represent this situation as 20 + (−20) = 0. When you add opposites, the sum is zero. So, opposites are also called additive inverses. Opposites
The sum of an integer and its opposite is zero. Addition of Opposites
Adding Integers Same Sign The sum of two positive integers is positive. The sum of two negative integers is negative. Different Signs To add two integers with different signs, find the difference of their absolute values. The sum has the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. Rules- Note Page
Color Chips On your note page, what block would represent a positive number? -7 + 3 -1 + 4 7 + (-3) -2 + (-2) Using Models to Add Integers
A number line provides another model that you can use to add integers On two plays, a football team first loses 8 yd and then gains 3 yd. Find −8 + 3 to find the result of the two plays. Number Line
From the surface, a diver goes down 20 feet and then comes back up 4 feet. Find -20 + 4 to find where the diver is. Note page Example
Use a number line to find 2 + (–6). Use a number line to find –4 + 9. Use a number line to find –5 + (–1). Practice – Quick Check # 2
Adding Integers Signs are the same, Add the values. Signs are different, Subtract the values Keep the sign of the larger value. What does it Mean
Find –22 + (–16). Find 60 + (–13). Find –125 + 35 Practice
-7 + (-4) + 13 + -5 Order of Operations
