The Adventurous Adventure of Serf Wilson By: Ha Nguyen
Your name is Laurence Wilson. You are from the middle ages in the year 1347 and you're a serf who comes from England. Your mother died when you were born and your father died just last year. You don't have any family but what you do have is a terrible lord who treats you really badly. You have always wished to get away from him. One day, when you were out on the field planting potatoes, you got sucked into the ground and you become unconscious for a while. When you wake up, you find yourself in a house which looks very modern. It turns out that you're in the future. You see a lady coming into the room with a man in a white cape and a box. You sit right up and ask where you are. They say that you are in the UK and you don't have anything to worry about. The man then takes out a weird looking tool with 3 ends, 2 which he puts into his ears and one with a flat base, which he puts on your chest. You freak out a little but then you try to remain calm. You start to get suspicious because you're sure that peasants like you don't get to be treated like this and you're pretty sure that these people dress weird. "What year is this, may I ask you?" The woman raised an eyebrow and laughed nervously. "Umm, we're in 2012… why do you ask? Ha.. Ha… ha…" You are confused because of the weird language and realize that you're in the future. Then you see on the table beside you a piece of paper that has writing. You recognize some of the writing based on your knowledge when you were small. You see "Black Death kills most of Europe in year 1347" on the piece of paper. You grabbed the piece of paper and asked the lady: "Is this reality? you should tell me about this. People died did they?" "Um.. Yes. Almost all of Europe died, but there were also a lot of survivors. There were a lot of different Black Plague's, though. Once again, why do you ask?" "You might not believe me. But I am from the year 1347 and am a puny servant of a great lord," "Have some more rest, I believe you are still not well," the lady said to you and smiled a smile that you're positive you've seen somewhere before. But you don't. You're too deep in thought. You realize that if you stay here, you won't catch the Black Plague. But you still don't know what to do. Do you: Stay so you can find out more about the plague. or Try to find a way home to warn the other people that they're going to die.
You chose to stay in the future, since you will have less chances of dying than if you try to find a way back. Also, you don't really have family so what's the point of going home anyway? Your lord would probably just beat you up and ask you where were you and why weren't you finishing growing the potatoes. Also, if you go back, you'd probably die because of the Black Plague anyway, after all, Ms. McNairy did say that most of Europe died during this sickness anyway. So, on your first day in this place called the UK (?), Mrs. McNairy gave you these weird looking clothes which go along with "A T-shirt", "suspenders", "bow tie", "belt", "socks" and many other things you can't remember. After that, you take a turn and go to this place called "the library". There are a lot of books there and you ask the person called "the librarian" about the Black Plague. "The librarian" then takes you to a section of "the library" called the "Middle Ages Section". There, "the librarian" hands you a bunch of papers and says that you'll find everything about the Black Plague there. You look through the pile of papers: "The Black Death arrives in Messina, Sicily in October", "England caught the plague in summer, between June and August, 1348", "London catches Black Death", etc… and then it hits your eye: "Lord Serrienne and family dies during Black Plague". You realize that the paper was written about your lord and his family, which includes the love of your life, Madeline Serrienne. She was the only person who actually treated you well. You guys were together but you want to do something about this really badly but also, you don't. You go back to Ms. McNairy's house and into the room you are staying in. What should I do? I'm so confused right now… You think to yourself. "Hello! How was your walk around London? I still don't know your name. Are you free right now? Maybe we can… umm… talk about you for a while?" Ms. McNairy says to you, as she pokes her head in the room. "Of course, ma'am. Please do feel free to ask me anything, as I have asked you some questions myself," You say when Ms. McNairy goes inside the room. "Also, my name is Laurence Wilson, but you may call me by the name of Serf Wilson," You say as you bow down, in front of her. She laughs a magical laugh which you are sure you've heard before. "It’s okay, umm… Laurence. Why don't we take a stroll in the park? I guess it could be a good way for you to get to know London more and we could be talking quite peacefully…" She smiled. Do you: Go with Ms. McNairy to the park or Find a way back to save Madeline
"My honor to be invited for a walk in the park with you, m'lady," You say gratefully as you open the door for her and lead her out the door. She laughs again and curtsied. You laugh with her but you don't really understand what's so funny about that. You guys stop a various times on the way to the park, since Ms. McNairy's a "college teacher" and she's got a lot of "students". Every time you stop, Ms. McNairy would introduce you to the person she's talking to. When you got to the park, you feed the ducks with Ms. McNairy and sometimes, you'd see her smile and small smile, just like someone who you knew, but you just can't remember who it was. Then you sat down with her and she asked you a question, which made your heart flip: "Are you, like, umm… with anyone yet?" "What do you mean by with anyone?" "Well, like, umm… do you have a girlfriend or anything?" "Yes. I have a… girlfriend. You are. And Madeline too. You two are the only girls who are my friend." "Hahaha, okay then," she smiled the smile that made your body flicker "but who's Madeline?" "My lord's daughter…" you trailed off. "Well, where is she now?" "In 1347… I have betrayed her… I have left her… to die in the plague…" "Wait… what do you mean?" "I should've went back to save her but I chose to stay here with you instead…" Ms. McNairy smiled and said something that could've made you die because of happiness: "I think you should go back, save her, and we three could stay together and become the best of friends. What about that?" You look at her gratefully and together, you two go home. Ms. McNairy tells you that you should get back to the past the way which you came to the future. You first think about what happened before you got sucked into the ground. Well, I was planting potatoes… but before that, Lord Serrienne was talking about a guy who controls everyone with his miiinnnnddddd… you think to yourself but then your thoughts trail off. A guy who can control everyone just by thinking about it? You think harder. There must be someway to find him… Let's see what the Lord said after that… Your mind goes straight to you memory, when the Lord was talking to his wife: "Mary, I heard some of my friends talking about something very abnormal." "What is it, dear?" "They were…" Lord Serrienne looks around cautiously, "they were saying that a man controls all of our actions just with his thought." "Oh my! Did they say anything else, darling?" "Yes. They said that the man lives in the past, the present and the future." Lord Serrienne sais in a small, scared whisper as Lady Serrienne gasps cautiously. "Did they say where he lives?" "Yes. They said that he lives under the shoe shop, right down the street" THAT'S IT! You think to yourself, All I need to do is find the man to ask him to take me back to the past! But then something hits you. Didn't the Lord say that the man controls people? That means that the man sent you here for a reason. But the shoe shop is no long there, you think, but, it's replaced by that abandoned bakery… You quickly put on the jacket which Ms. McNairy gave to you and you rush outside, straight to the abandoned bakery. You push the door open, walk inside and look around. An old rusty clock, a dusty rack, a dirty clothes hanger, etc… You look up the ceiling. A ceiling fan and cobwebs… You look on the floor and spot a floor tile that's different from all the other tiles. The color, the texture and the size. This tile has a small hook that's camouflaged. You walk over to the tile and try to lift if up with the small hook. After you lifted the secret doorway, you see to paths. One that's dark, scary and dirty, causing shivers up your spine. The other one is clean and lit up with candles, making you have pleasant feelings. Do you: Choose the dark, scary and dirty path or Choose the path that's clean and lit up with candles
You chose this path. You were kind of freaked out at first because of the sound of the bats and owls. But after awhile, the path started brightening and warming up, making you feel better a little. You walk a few steps, turn a few turns, until you come up to a cave. You go inside the cave and you were startled by the scene. The outside looked extremely old and boring but the inside was the total contrary. The inside had television screens showing EVERYTHING and underneath these screens were buttons, which you think are for controlling what should be happening in the screens. You walk in a little further and you see two big doors. You push the door and walk inside and you see a big table and a big chair, back facing at you. "Hello?" you speak up, loudly. The chair spun around and you see… Nothing. But then you feel someone tapping on your knee. You look down and see a small man with burning red hair and a long foot-length moustache rainbow colored. He was dressed like a middle ages merchant on the top, but like a 21st century superstar on the bottom. "Are you Laurence Wilson, also known as Serf Wilson, works for Lord Serrienne, from the year 1347, but got sucked into the year 2012, while planting potatoes?" the small man asked you, while looking at a small piece of paper clipped onto a clipboard. "Yes… that is me…" you answered, voice trembling. What is he going to do to me? You thought. "Hello, Mr. Wilson. I am George Kadoodledlydoo, also known as George with the Beard. I'm the person who sent you here. You know about my job right? How are you today?" "Hi George, I'm fi-" "No time for that let's get straight into business," George said in a hurry and speed walked into another room. You follow him. This guy always seems to be in a hurry, what's the big deal? You think as you follow George into the room. "This," George points to a big machine that could possibly be 10 times bigger than your size "is where we create different sicknesses." "Wait… we?" "Yes. WE. I sent you here for a reason, Wilson. You'll be my assistant. You'll be in charge of this machine, too," Once again, George speaks so fast that you probably couldn't understand a single word he said, unless you replayed it over and over again in your mind. "This is how it works. This red button is to choose the type of sickness: those that might cause death if not found quick enough, those that will cause death, and those that come and go. This green button is to choose if the sickness shall spread or not. This blue button, if the sickness shall spread, is to choose how it's spread: through food, through flees, etcetera… And this yellow button is to choose how it shall be started…" "But isn't this… bad?" "Oh no! Definitely no! This is good, especially for scientists and doctors! This will help them find more cures, more diseases and stuff like that! It's not bad! It's helping everyone!" "Well," you stammer "have you made any sicknesses yet?" "Yes! I've created cancer, pneumonia, food poisoning, chicken pox, and loads more!" George said proudly "And I'm working on a brand new one! The Black Death!" "The Black… Death?" You ask, kind of freaked out. This man is mad! He's mentallyinsane! "Are you sure this isn't bad? Because, according to reliable sources, it wiped out a third of Europe!" "Isn't that a good thing? If it weren't for the my Black Death, the world would have more than 8 billion people alive right now. 8 BILLION PEOPLE! Think about it Wilson. Think about it." George said, passionately. So you thought about it. Do you: Stay and work for George. or Ask George (nicely) to send you back to the past.
You chose to stay and work for George, creating different kinds of sicknesses that, according to George, would help mankind. You kept on creating new diseases, with the help of George. After 2 months, half of the world's population was wiped out, thanks to the sicknesses that were caused by you and George. 1 week after that, you die, not because of age, but because of the bad chemicals in the machine that are capable of killing people after a few months of usage.
You chose to not work with George. Instead, you ask him: "George, I really appreciate this generous offer, and I really do feel honored when you present to me this job. But I actually came here to ask you to send me back home…" "Why do you want to go home? You've got a terrible lord and you'll never be able to be with the love of your life anyway." "What makes you think so?" "She's already engaged and they're getting married tomorrow. Also, she doesn't love YOU." Saying that, George laughed evilly "You can go back. But you're never gonna get what you want and you'll be broken hearted. You can stay here, and live happily ever after, in fact, I'll even let you marry my daughter, Winifred, who, I bet, is a million times more beautiful than that Miranda of yours." "Madeline. But please, let me go back. Maybe, I won't be able to have her, but at least I can see her happy everyday." "But she's going to die, thanks to the plague which I'm about to cause. I'm going to launch this plan tomorrow morning, after Marilyn gets married." "Madeline. But please, let me go back. Maybe I won't be able to see her alive but please, at least let me see her one last time." "Fine. Walk to the end of the hallway. There will be a red door with a gold knob. Push the door. Then walk to the left. Not the right. But the left. Then press the green button. Not the red one, but the green one. Go in the glass cage that will pop up after that. Then press the yellow button. Hold on tight. After about 3 minutes, you'll appear right before her eyes. Don't touch her though, because then you'll catch the black plague. Do what I say and you won't die. Do the opposite, well, it won't be so pretty." Do you: Do what George says or Do the opposite of what George says
You chose to do what George said, and once again, you passed the sickness-creating machine. Since you definitely didn't want Madeline to die, you decided to sabotage the evil George with the Beard by switched places for some of the wires. You didn't know what it could've done but after that, and after you did what George told you to do, you arrived in the past, and the Black Plague never got to see the light of day. Epilogue: Madeline did NOT get married with the other guy. Instead, she got married with you, secretly, and you two ran away to a hideaway where you lived happily ever after.
You chose to do the opposite of what George said and you died.
You chose this path. You were walking, skipping in between steps, sing and whistling pleasantly. Like, what could possibly go wrong? Everything's so bright and peaceful. It's not like you're going to catch the Black Plague in the middle of nowhere, right? You caught the Black Plague, due to some of the disease carriers which were disguised as black birds. The flees from those 'birds' jumped on you, causing you to die after a few hours, before you could even get out of the middle of nowhere.
"My apologies, ma'am, I might not have told you before, but I'm actually from the past. I work for my lord, Lord Serrienne, and his family, back in the year of 1347. I was actually planting my potatoes in the garden when the ground pulled me in, and I appeared here, in the future." You say. Ms. McNairy laughs that tingly laugh again and your heart throbs. But this time, you see that her eyes look uncomfortable. "But I have to find a way back now, because my lord and his family is in danger and I have to save them. He might not have been the best lord, but his daughter is the woman of my heart, and she's always treated me so well." You look at Ms. McNairy. She looks back at you and smiles a sad smile. "Is there something wrong?" You ask her. "Yes. There is something wrong. This house belongs to my mum and dad and I've lived with them here all my life, that is, until they died last year. Since then, I've been living here alone, with no company, unless my friends come over, or my students come over so I can tutor them. I've been really lonely, until you came here, and actually became my friend. I've actually had some fun, teaching you modern English… do you really have to go?" "Yes, and I'm sorry. I promise that I'll bring Madeline over to visit you after I save her from the plague, though." you said and you saw Ms. McNairy brighten up. "Great! I've actually got a friend who's building a time machine at the moment. She said told me that her colleagues and her should have the time machine finished and tested this evening. Do you want to be the first person ever to travel back in time with a time machine?" "Yes! I'd be honored." you say happily. That evening, you and Ms. McNairy go to her friend's house for you to tryout the time machine. Ms. McNairy's friend, Ms. Ileus, told you to get inside the machine and strap the seat belt on. Then she told you to press a red button and type in the year which you want to get to. So you typed in "1347". Then, you pressed a green button and everything around outside the machine disappeared. The machine spun around, so quickly that you fainted because of dizziness. When you woke up again, you found yourself on the street, surrounded by dead people. When you got out of the machine, you saw that one of the dead people were Madeline. She was covered with purplish blackish bumps and she was as pale as the color of her shoes. You held her and cried. That night, you died.
The next few days, Ms. McNairy, the owner of the house, taught you some "proper language". But after that, you chose to find a way home to warn the other people. You first think about what happened before you got sucked into the ground. Well, I was planting potatoes… but before that, Lord Serrienne was talking about a guy who controls everyone and everything… you think to yourself but then your thoughts trail off. A guy who can control everyone just by thinking about it? You think harder. There must be someway to find him… Let's see what the Lord said after that… Your mind goes straight to you memory, when the Lord was talking to his wife: "Mary, I heard some of my friends talking about something very abnormal." "What is it, dear?" "They were…" Lord Serrienne looks around cautiously, "they were saying that a man controls everyone and everything." "Oh my! But the shoe shop is no long there, you think, but, it's replaced by that abandoned bakery… You quickly put on the jacket which Ms. McNairy gave to you and you rush outside, straight to the abandoned bakery. You run down the street but then trip on a packet of… "Potato roots?" you say out loud. And then it hits you. You got sucked into the future while planting potatoes. Maybe, you could get sucked back into the past the same way. Just maybe, though. You went to the park, and found the gardener. You asked him if you could plant potatoes here and he said yes. As soon as you planted the potato root into the ground, you once again, got sucked into the earth and into the past. And you blacked out for a while. When you woke up, you found yourself in your hut, on your bed, and you got outside. When you got outside, you saw Madeline, the lord's daughter, also the love of your life, planting the potatoes for you. "Madeline? Why are you planting potatoes? That's a serf's job!" "You were sick, Laurence. Also, mum and dad…" "What happened?" "They died because of a sickness that's spreading everywhere! I have to avoid going outside now, I don't want to die!" "Oh dear, the Black Death has already reached here?" "What are you talking about?" "Oh, nothing you should worry about. Go inside. I'll finish planting these." At night, Madeline invites you in to eat dinner with her. Just as you were about to get out of your hut and into the manor, you here a knock on the door. You open the door and on of your old friends, Serf Joseph, ran in and closed the door shut. "I hear... that you're going to… have dinner… with Madeline?" he asked you, panting "Yes. Why?" "Don't. She's caught the sickness, too." "How?" "She was too upset about her parents that she just had to go outside and die." "Oh lord…" you said as you sprinted out of your hut and into the manor. "Madeline…" you said as stand outside her room "Hello Laurence." Madeline coughed "I'm sorry I had to cancel our dinner… I just miss my parents so much that I might as well die, too, so that I could see them in heaven…" "Why do you have to do this to yourself?" "Because I have to get marry with someone I don't love… don't you just hate arranged marriages?" "Yeah…" "Yeah? What does yeah mean?" "What? Oh, umm… nothing…" you blushed. Madeline smiled and sighed. That's when you realize where you have seen Ms. McNairy's smile before. It fits perfectly with Madeline's. You realize that losing Madeline doesn't mean that you'd lose everything. Ms. McNairy would probably still be waiting for you, with luck… but you still don't know if you should stay and watch everyone die, or go back to the future. Do you: Stay and watch everyone die or Go back to the future
You choose to stay and watch everyone who you love and care about die. But you don't really get to watch them die yet because right after you say your last goodbye to Madeline before she dies, you hug her and sob uncontrollably. That night, you feel sick and tired so you lie down on your bed. That very night, you die.
You decide to go to the future. You also decide to go there the very same way you came back. You plant potatoes. And once again, you arrive at Ms. McNairy's house. She is extremely happy to find you coming back. You live with her, as her best friend, happily ever after. Quick Fact: Ms. McNairy's house belonged to her parents and she's lived with them all her life, that is, until they both died in a car crash the year before. Since then, she's been living here alone, with no company, unless her friends come over, or her students come over so she can tutor them. She's been really lonely, until you came here, and actually became her friend.
