Organic Farming + Doubling Of Farmers’ Income By Sharad Marathe
Agricultural Problem • Farmer distress • Low income – not enough to support the family • No market access • Small farm size (83% less than 2 acres)- getting smaller through divisions • No Economies of scale • Low productivity • Lot of land is wasted in demarcation, odd shapes and sizes • Irrigation system - non-scientific • Dis-organized farming with no scientific approach
Agricultural Problem (Continued) • Employment opportunities • Not growing • Not keeping up with the rising aspirations of the youth • Depleting soil health – due to use of fertilizers and pesticides • Government resources not enough to address the problem • Incentives from government focus on increasing production and not on increasing net income • Interventions typically focus on aggregating farmers, giving inputs to them and in some cases giving support to reach market
Organic Farming Problems • Certification time (3 years) and cost • What happens until you are certified? • Typically lower productivity compared to chemical based farming • Thus higher cost of production • Higher prices mean lower volume • Hence the conventional thinking is this is a niche market with limited growth potential and only for the rich • But reality is the opposite!
Top Ten Organic Producers (2015) • 2.4 million organic producers globally • 35% of World’s Organic Producers are in Asia • INDIA is country with the Most Organic Producers
Organic Production in India • India produced around 1.35 million MT of certified organic products in the year 2015-16 which includes: • All varieties of food products namely Sugarcane, Oil Seeds, Cereals & Millets, Cotton, Pulses, Medicinal Plants, Tea, Fruits, Spices, Dry Fruits, Vegetables, Coffee etc. • Production is not limited to the edible sector but also includes organic cotton fiber, functional food products etc.
Area Under Organic Farming • Currently, 1% of the world’s agricultural land is organic • 64% increase in organic agricultural land in India in 2015 from 2014 ie an addition of 0.5 million hectares • Total area under organic certification is 5.71million Hectare (2015-16) which includes: • 26% cultivable area with 1.49 million Hectare • Rest 74% (4.22 million Hectare) forest and wild area for collection of minor forest produces • Madhya Pradesh has covered largest area under organic certification followed by Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan
Exports of Organic Food Products • Exports in 2015-16 – 2.6 Lakh MT • Organic food export revenue $300 US Million • Organic products are exported to European Union, US, Canada, Switzerland, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asian countries, Middle East, South Africa etc.
Organic Farming New Approach • Increasing productivity through use of new business models • Reducing input cost for fertilizers and pest control supplies • Build global brand for produce and products • Major opportunities • Organic wine for exports and domestic consumption • Ayurvedic formulations for treating major illnesses like Diabetis, Arthritis, Cancer, etc. • Nutritional supplements • Coordinate with Ayush ministry
