Situation Ethics • Situational relativism • Act on the basis of (Agape) love in each situation • Joseph Fletcher (1966) – the morally right thing is the most loving thing; but this depends on the situation. • “Our obligation is relative to the situation, but obligation in the situation is absolute.” • Contains 4 working principles - Pragmatism - Relativism - Positivism - Personalism
4 Working Principles • Pragmatism – practical • Relativism – relative to the situation • Positivism – an act of faith (which cannot be worked out by intelligence) • Personalism – puts people first rather than principles (for example, natural law)
Right to a Child • Infertility affects at least 5% of couples • There are different treatments that could help a couple have a child such as, IVF, A.I.H, A.I.D or Surrogacy. • The H.F.E.A, legalised in 1991 is a non departmental Government body that regulates and inspects all UK clinics providing IVF, donor insemination or the storage of eggs, sperm or embryos which allows a couple to have a child safely.
Right to a Child with Situation Ethics • When a couple are desperate to have a child, infertility treatments can fulfil the needs and wishes many coupleswhich seems like the most loving thing. • However when applying it to the four working principles it does not to see agree with all of them, which argues if situation ethics agrees with certain fertility treatments.
Right to a Child with Situation Ethics • Certain fertility treatment such as I.V.F would not be the most pragmatic thing to use for gaining a child, as it can take around 4 or 5 times for a woman to actually pregnant and there can be other ways such as adoption. • However it is still relative to the couple as it their chance to have a child and producing a child for this couple is a loving thing to do.
Right to a Child with Situation Ethics • Fertility treatments would not be as positive as originally thought. Any treatments would be seen as “playing God” something that is not an act of faith. • It is personal to the couple who wants a child and it is putting them first instead of different principles. • However it is the most loving thing for a couple who would care and love the child, meaning that Agape would agree to the right for a child.
