TheWritingProcess • Planning: Gathering, shaping, organizing information. (Brainstorming, webbing, outlining, graphic organizers, looping, etc.) Students decide audience, purpose, and form. • Drafting: Writers put their ideas into print and find their voice. • Revising: Rethinking, reshaping, reordering of ideas. • Editing: Checking for clear, effective, grammatically correct writing. (Word choice and sentence fluency) • Proofreading:Checking for correct spelling, mechanics, etc.
TheWritingPrinciples • Students learn to write by writing. • Writing activities should be integrated with curricula. • Teachers need to write with their students, modeling the writing process. • Students need to have opportunities to share their writing. • Writers need constructive feedback via questions (not criticism). • Students learn to write by reading excellent and varied writing. • Repeated successful encounters with writing help unmotivated learners.
Writing Exercise • WritingRoulette
WritingRoulette • Divide class into groups of 4 or 5, present students with 5 story starters. • Story starters: • It wasn’t supposed to… • The day my life… • Oh No! What have I… • It was the best of times, it was… • I never realized that…
WritingRouletteCont. • Allow individual group members to choose any story starter they want. (It’s ok if more than one chooses the same story starter) • Instruct groups to begin writing; after 2 minutes, call time. (Students are to stop writing, even if they are in the middle of a word) • Exchange papers, read, and then continue writing where previous person stopped. • Call time again after 2 minutes of writing; continue the process (following previous format) until each writer gets his/her original paper back. • Original writer puts a conclusion on paper. Note: this is not timed. • Add 1 to 2 minutes on the time after each exchange to allow for reading. You may want to have each writer use a different color so that you can distinguish between them.
