The race is on… • Tomorrow is the ELA TAKS test. • Report to your testing room before 7:15 a.m. • Bring a snack – it will be very late before you eat lunch. • Do your best!
Before the Test • Get a decent amount of sleep the night before. • Dress appropriately – Layer. • Eat something for breakfast – THINK PROTEIN. • Bring your #2 pencils and highlighter. • Take a deep breath.
During the Test • Read all of the directions. • Use a dictionary! • Remember that the passages, OERs, and essay are thematically linked. • Take your time.
OERs • When beginning your OERs, do some prewriting. • Remember, OERs test reading not writing. • Answer the question. • Support your answer with direct, textual evidence. • HALT!
OERs • When beginning your OERs, do some prewriting. • Remember, OERs test reading not writing. • Answer the question. • Support your answer with direct, textual evidence. • HALT! • If the question asks you about a change, you have to have two quotes. • Beware of “AND” in your answers!
Essay • Some say you should do this first. • FOCUS ON THE PROMPT! • Intro starters • Dialogue • Onomatopoeia • Beginning in the middle of the story • Use the thesaurus to remind you of better words that you know. Don’t try to use words you’re not familiar with. • The story has to be BELIEVABLE (not necessarily true). • You are graded on focus & coherence, organization, development of ideas, voice, and conventions.
After the Test • Go back over your answers. • Bring a BOOK to read. (You may not have a magazine, and you may not write while others have tests out.) • Rest – you’ve just finished a marathon!
