Support • Local support structure • Number of people compared to size of cell • Does you site actively participate in OpenAfs • If so how many FTEs does this take • Does your site provide local management tools • IBM Transarc support • Are sites still using it? • Extended support? • Third party vendor support?

COMPUTING NEWS: FARMS • Farms team building various utilities to manage large numbers of worker nodes *NOTE: More detail in talk presented 04/04/00 • Several other organizations looking into Linux Farms • QCD: 1000+ nodes • BTeV: 5000+ nodes • CMS: analysis/build linux “cluster” and compute farms • Need to investigate racked integrated 2U systems

COMPUTING NEWS:AFS • Stability is the key: • AFS services continues to be very stable • 4Q99 upgrades: • Hardware upgrades to several servers • AFS 3.5 • Solaris 2.6 • Hardware Raid deployed • Distribution of AFS for desktops increasing • Utilizing central login and products service • Linux client available in standard release of FRHL 6.1

COMPUTING NEWS:E-MAIL • Migrating off FNAL e-mail gateway • Migrating to Sun systems (off VMS) running PMDF • Systems just arrived • E-mail list service migrating to NT using LISTSERV software • Many options to this software make it good/bad • A few lists have been migrated already and rest to be done by end of April • 3 IMAP servers deployed and stable • Deploying sendmail UPS product to provide continuity across the UNIX OS’s we support

SECURITY:Status Strong Authentication • Pilot project close to successful conclusion • CDF now using SA in daily life • Offsite users from LBNL and Oxford • Cron authentication working and being incorporated into a somewhat user-friendly package • Issued 16 Cryptocards (out of 125 users) • Jan 14, 2000 export law changes mean overseas hosts can use UPD to install FERMI kerberos package

COMPUTING NEWS:MISCELLANEOUS • Computing Division is investigating backup utilities • Eval of freeware product Amanda underway • Eval of Legato underway (especially interesting for Oracle) • What are others doing? • Computing Division is investigating LabView for Linux. (Is anyone else doing this?)
