Today we’re talking about him… NOT him! Bellringer: Read the yellow box at the bottom of page 570. Answer the following questions. • What was Martin Luther’s goal? • What did Luther do to try to reach his goal (hint: look at the picture!)? • What did the Catholic Church do in response?
When you see Martin Luther, that means it’s very important! • Don’t forget to use abbreviations and shorten it up!!!
Unpopular Church Practices • People felt the church had become too political and too rich • People objected to church selling indulgences • Indulgences were documents excusing people from sins (Basically, people bought a piece of paper that said they could go to heaven)
Efforts to Reform • Calls for reform led to changes in society • Some Catholics tried to reform from within the church • Others formed new churches instead • The movement to leave the Roman Catholic Church is called the Reformation • Those leaving the church became known as Protestants (they were protesting the Catholic Church)
Martin Luther • Catholic priest who called for reformation of the church practices, including selling of indulgences • October 31, 1517, he nailed a list of complaintsabout the church to a church door, 95 Theses (Thee-sees)
Martin Luther • Luther was excommunicated from the church • Luther’s followers eventually left and formed the Lutheran church
Other Reformers • Luther’s actions led to other reformers splitting from the church to start new churches • The most famous of all was King Henry VIII (8th) who started the Anglican Church (Church of England)
King Henry VIII • Henry VIII—king of England who split with the church over the issue of allowing him a divorce • The pope said no divorce, so King Henry said it’s ok, I’ll just start my own church • England left the Catholic church with him (Henry said to live in England, you had to be Anglican…so most people converted instead of moved)
Henry VIII • Listen to the podcast about Henry VIII • Fill in the bubble map as you go about his 6 wives… • If you need to hear it again, we can listen to it once more.
Henry VIII • Now watch this funny video to help you remember the wives… • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fadCAHjN-s
Martin Luther • The reason that these churches exist (Anglican, Lutheran, Protestant, etc) is because of Martin Luther • When he posted the 95 Theses, calling for change, he inspired others to do the same • What would you like to change about your school? On your paper, write your own “Five Theses” about changes you would like to see. • Remember, Martin Luther offered suggestions, not just complaints… add in solutions to your problems—how would YOU fix the problems at MMAM?
