Barriers to Collaboration Can Beavers & Ducks really, truly work together?
Barrier #1: Distance • Is geography destiny? • Out of sight, out of mind? • More chance of flawed communication? What can we do to remove physical, intellectual and social distance?
Barrier #2: Difference • Perceived differences get in the way: • We are more process-oriented • We are more nimble • They are too conservative • They don’t bring anything to the table • We are more faculty driven • We are more evidenced based • They don’t care about assessment What can we do to move beyond perceptions of difference that hinder collaboration?
Barrier #3: Dissonance • Can you really serve two masters? • Won’t we have dueling priorities? • Where do my marching orders come from? How do we establish coordinated, clear and transparent expectations when it comes to collaboration?
Barrier #4: Discomfort • Who are you? • What can you do for me? • Why should I listen to you? How do we commit to getting to know each other, our areas of expertise and skills?
The Big Four • Distance: I don’t see or hear you • Difference: You come from an alien culture • Dissonance: I have different marching orders • Discomfort: I don’t really know you or understand what you do Let’s do something about it!
