Why Every Day Counts and ABC Technology? ABC is a paradigm shift in the project planning and procurement approach where the need to minimize mobility impacts which occur due to onsite construction activities are elevated to a higher priority.
Types of ABC Technologies being used in Wisconsin • PBES - Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems • GRS-IBS - Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil – Integrated Bridge System • Lateral Slides • SPMT – Self Propelled Modular Transport
GRS-IBS- Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil – Integrated Bridge System
ABC Decision-Making Matrix • Develop an initial score of applicability • Disruption (on/under bridge) • User Cost and Delays • Construction Time • Environment (mitigation) • Risk Management (Safety & Operation) • Other (Economy of Scale, Weather)
What are Prefabricated Bridge Elements & Systems (PBES) and what are the benefits? • Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) - Innovative Bridge Designs for Rapid Renewal (R04) • Prefabricated Piers
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems PBES is one of the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods used to minimize impact to traffic, increase safety during construction, and minimize impacts in environmentally sensitive areas.
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems • One of the five major methods that FHWA has emphasized as accelerating technologies • Structural components of a bridge built offsite, or adjacent to the alignment • Reduces the onsite construction time and mobility impact timethat occurs from conventional construction methods.
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems Benefits • Reduced environmental impacts • Improved work zone & worker safety • Improved product quality: controlled environment, cure times, easier access, etc. • Lower initial and Life-Cycle Costs
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems Elements: single structural components of a bridge • Deck Elements • Beam Elements • Pier Elements • Abutment Elements • Miscellaneous Elements
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems Systems: • Entire superstructure – SPMT’s • Entire superstructure or bridge – lateral slides
SHRP2 • TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2): Innovative Bridge Designs for Rapid Renewal: ABC Toolkit • Describes standardized approaches to designing and constructing complete bridge systems for rapid renewals. • $300,000 allocated to the I-39/90 Expansion Project for prefabricated piers on 4 Dane Co. structures • Must be obligated by 9/26/13
PBES - Piers • I-39/90 project staff interest • Pier shape – favorable for precast • Opportunity for repetition – re-use of forms • Save $ • Save time
PBES - Piers I-94 N-S Corridor @ Rawson Ave. • Precast columns • Precast pier cap
Next Steps • I-39/90 project schedule • SHRP2 schedule • Prefabricated Pier standards and specifications
