How I got my internship Through the Accounting Department • Applied for the internship at the beginning of Fall quarter • Got approved by the Accounting Chair Department • After being approved, the Chair Department emailed me a list of all possible firms that I could schedule an appointment with to do an interview for the internship

Internship Information Hired to work in the Agribusiness Department – Dairies and Farms My supervisor Diane Yesenosky CPA and manager of the department Also worked for: Karen Butler – Senior Tim Gulling – Partner MWSFT has been associated with the dairy industry since the early 1950s The firm has clients in California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Kansas
Main Assignments • Payroll Tax Forms (Payments): These forms are done at the end of each quarter • W2s and 1099s • Form W2 – Wage and Tax Statement: A form given to employees to report to the IRS their wages paid and taxes withheld from the employer. • Form 1099 : A form to report various types of income (other than wages, salaries and tips). 1099s are given for: services rendered to unincorporated companies amounts over $600
Assignments (Cont’d) 1099s given at the end of each calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31) 1099 INT - Interest Income 1099 Div – Dividend Income 1099 B – Sales Proceeds 1099 MISC – Miscellaneous Income • Coded client’s checks into Quickbooks (Bank Reconciliation) • Income Tax Returns

Benefits of an Internship • Major benefit is to experience first-hand how is like to work/live in the “real accounting world” • It is a short-time commitment • Real experience, might get paid, earn course credit units • It allows the intern to decide whether to continue with an accounting major or to follow another path • It is a plus when listed in the resume’
Advice • To get an internship long before graduating • It is helpful to get work experience before graduating, increases your chances of getting a job faster • Look for information about internship requirements before finishing the basic and/or intermediate courses • Look for an internship immediately after taking the basic and/or intermediate courses
