  1. UCLA Team Offense

  2. Offensive Philosophy Get on Base Create Scoring Opportunities Quality AB’s in Crunch Time Situations

  3. Get On Base • Goal: Team OB% > .380 • How?? • Be prepared • Line drive Mid/Opp Approach • Strike Zone Discipline • 2K adjustments

  4. Be Prepared Understand Strengths and Weaknesses Have a Plan/Approach when you step into the box

  5. Line Drive Middle/Opp. Approach Advantages: See ball longer/deeper Stay behind baseball, and on ball longer Stay inside baseball Margin for error is bigger

  6. Strike Zone Discipline Patience No Chase Grind out AB’s 2K Adjustments – QAB > 37%

  7. Create Scoring Opportunities Ability to execute on command > 70% All hitters must be able to bunt and hit & run Situational At- Bats - Unselfish

  8. QAB in Crunch Time Crunch Time AB’s – RBI Situations Competitive Greatness AB’s QAB’s > 50% w/ RISP

  9. RBI Situations 2 out RBI – LD/Hard GB in the middle. Never make the last out of an inning in the air w/ RISP. 3B IF Back – GB up the middle. Be aggressive early. RBI more important than a hit. 3b IF In – See ball up & stay inside baseball. Drive ball gap to gap. 1st & 3rd – Stay away from DP. Most DP’s originate on left side. RHH stay inside baseball – No rollovers! LHH can take advantage of 4 hole. Bases Loaded – Stay behind baseball w/ oppo gap approach. Keep ball off ground! **Staying inside the baseball w/ a mid.opp approach will produce more LD’s and hard hit balls (RBI’s) than any other approach!!!

  10. Methods of Evaluation Game Rating Sheet – Team Evaluation Quality At-Bat Chart – Individual Evaluation Point System – Individual Evaluation

  14. Quality AB’s • QAB’s – Overall >50% • <2K > 63% • 2K > 37% • RISP > 50%

  15. Point System 0 points strikeout 1 point fly ball out 2 points ground ball out 3 points walk/HBP 4 points QAB other than walk or HBP

  16. Situational Hitting • Things to consider • Hitter strengths and weaknesses • Baserunner(s) strengths and weaknesses • Pitcher/Defense strengths and weaknesses • Game Situation – Inning, Score, Count

  17. R @ 1b R@ 1b 0 out – Must create a scoring opportunity! Can give up an out, but runner must be in scoring position at the conclusion of AB. 1 out – Try to gain a base without giving up an out 2 out – base runner finds a way to get into scoring position.

  18. R @ 2b • 0 out – Can give up an out, but runner must be at 3b at conclusion of AB. • 1 out – Base runner find a way to get to 3b without giving up an out. • 2 out – base runner should focus on a good secondary lead to score on a base hit.

  19. R @ 3b < 2 out - stay in the middle of the field. Will give up an out to score a run. Infield in – Approach should be middle of field, get a pitch to elevate gap to gap in the outfield. Infield back – Approach should be middle of the field – keep the ball off the corners

  20. R’s @ 1b & 3b • < 2 out – Drive in a run and advance a runner into scoring position without giving up more than 1 out. Stay out of DP! • 2 out – R at 1b find a way to get to 2b without giving up an out. • Specialty Plays – Opportunity to score a cheap run.

  21. R’s @ 2b & 3b < 2 out – Must score at least 1 run, but really looking for the big inning.

  22. Benefits • Players/Team have better understanding of how offense operates. • Eliminates pressure of end results and places focus on the process of having QAB’s • Helps players compete against the game and not the opponent. • Emphasizes offensive production as a unit not individuals. 9vs 1 mentality. The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.
